Bird Theme: Owl Babies Craft

birdthemetotschool-2458

For the Bird Theme, we are reading Owl Babies and The Story About Ping books.  Vito enjoys reading them with me but he loves Owl Babies more. So in line with it, we made some cotton owls at home to extend our learning about owls and the textures of birds.
Here's what you will need for this activity:
- black cardstock
- glue
- cotton wool
- sticks
- goggly eyes
You will see these in our product listings here.

To start, I made shapes of three owls in a black cardstock and allowed Vito to scatter the glue all around for our cotton wool.

I showed Vito how to apply cotton on the first owl, and he worked on the the rest.

Once we formed the three owl babies, I added more glue at the bottom of the paper and made Vito put some sticks on it.  The sticks were from the backyard that Mavi picked for us earlier. Vito enjoyed breaking the sticks into small lengths!

I wanted to wait a little further for the sticks to dry but he wanted to put the goggly eyes already!

I helped him peeled off the sticker so he can place the eyes in the wool. You can also apply glue instead of removing the sticky tape at the back, this is much easier! I also cut out tiny pieces of triangular shaped orange cardstock for the beak and added it to the “cute” owls of Vito.

And behold the final product!

This was Mavi’s work.  He was conservative with the cotton wool so they turned out small.  He said that it’s supposed to be small as they are still babies.

Another craft project that both of the boys participated and enjoyed. Love it!

These owl babies are SO CUTE! I love this simple craft. I can hear Little Bee saying, "Mommy, how cute!" I will need to give these owl babies a go when we do an owl unit. :)
