Exploring Animals in the Marine Ecosystem
Thursday, July 3, 2014
A sudden change in weather made us look into the world of marine animals. Per usual, we use Safari Toob Animal Figures (Safari Ltd Coral Reef Toob and Toob Toobs Sharks Miniatures ), FREE Marine Animal Cards which I created a long time ago, books from the library (see affiliate list for the details) and some paper crafts for our mini project.
The World of Arthropods for Kids (Part Two)
Friday, June 13, 2014
Here are the activities we've done on the last part of our Insect Study.
Activity 1: Moulding insects using plasticine and playdough.
Activity 2: Matching the insect figures to the insect picture cards we have. Also, we used our fact cards to learn about each insect group and their characteristics.
Activity 3: Body parts. Here Mavi worked on a worksheet identifying the major body parts of an insect.
Activity 4: Sorting of insect and non-insect animal figures. Oh he loved this!! See how he identifies the figure? He sorted them by counting their legs!
Activity 5: This is just out of the blue activity. I was cleaning up our kitchen and saw Mavi's old learning materials in a box. So I took them out and let him play with these minibeasts again. We had this activity before when he was 3 years old, picking up the insects using the kiddie chopsticks. The toy insects were from a local store here.
And that ends our Arthropods-Insect Study :) Next is Crustaceans and Centipedes, but I'm reserving this topic in July or August.
And there you go peeps! If you have any questions just leave me a comment and I will get back to you as soon as I can. You are free to share this post and copy the activities (just link back to me if you find my activities interesting).

Animal Habitats Cards
Wednesday, May 21, 2014
Hello readers! I am happy to present to you my product on learning Animal Habitats which is one of our favorite learning materials at home.
This learning material will help the child learn about the different biomes in the world and the animals that thrive in those habitats. What inspired me to create this material is that, my son loves to sort out his animal figures according to the places they live. He would ask me "Mom, does tiger live in the forest? or savanna?" And it's pretty much hard to explain at times why certain animals can thrive in the colder regions and how others survive in the desert. So I made this learning material so I can answer all of my son's questions.

Exploring the Animal Kingdom for Kids
Tuesday, April 22, 2014
PS. I was a little bit hesitant to introduce this subject to Mavi. But I was surprised that he was attentive all throughout our lesson. He even patiently read all the description cards for me. I am happy that he was able to grasp the concept immediately, that not all animals are the same, that they are grouped so we can easily identify their features and understand their characteristics and uniqueness.

The Animal Kingdom Learning Material
Tuesday, April 15, 2014
I'm so happy that my laminator arrived yesterday and I was busy laminating these cards (thus my absence in blogging).
This is my Animal Kingdom learning material. It is a PDF file which you can download from here, The Animal Kingdom Learning Pack, or by clicking the pictures below. It consist of the following:
- The Animal Kingdom MASTER Chart in A4 SIZE
- Chart with pictures only (no labels) in A4 SIZE
- Chart with labels only in A4 SIZE
- Chart with no pictures and labels in A4 SIZE
- 15 cards with pictures and labels to form the chart
- 15 cards with pictures and no labels (for 3 part card use)
- 15 label cards (for 3 part card use)
- Matching definition cards
Oh they look so lovely once laminated! Don't mind the lines on that image of the starfish. That's just my printer who's already low on ink :(
So the file has 9 invertebrates and 5 vertebrates and they all come with definition cards that you can read with your kids (or let your kids read them if they are already a reader).
Hope you like it! Thank you!
Bird Unit Activities
Wednesday, April 9, 2014
Son's request was for us to have another bird unit (click here for our previous lessons). So here are the activities and materials I have gathered for this week's unit study.
Bird Nomenclature and Definition Cards. Whenever we study animals, I always start by introducing the different parts of the animals and how they function. I just have to say we've been using 3 part cards method and it has accelerated my son's reading.
Following the nomenclature and definition, my son always works with the activity sheet identifying the parts. Here he can make his own booklet of bird parts using colored pencils and crayons.
Bird parts booklet. This method enables my son to practice his spelling and a much deeper understanding of the bird parts.
Bird species matching. I provided bird pictures in the my Bird Pack which we use to identify the different species of birds. We use our Safari Toob bird collection (and Schleich too).
Bird's feet classification. I made a table of the different types of bird's feet and list down the bird (figures) that we have. This activity aims to identify the the bird's habitat and lifestyle.
Similarly, I printed out a picture of the different shape of the bird's beak from here. With this activity Mavi will be able to tell what the birds eat. This activity was inspired by this one.
Bird's colors. Because Mavi loves to color, I collected these images from the web. The aim of this activity is for Mavi to color the birds based on our figures.
The nomenclature cards, definition and bird cards were also from the Bird Pack. Click the image below for the link.
