Learning Activities for 28 Months Toddler

These are the activities designed for Vito for this month as we are celebrating springtime integrating St. Patrick’s Day and Easter.  Materials used are provided below for your reference.
28months
1.  Brushing of Rocks.  We are exploring objects beginning with letter ‘R’ and it so happened that we have a few rocks at home that I kept from last year’s activity.  I made use of the rocks for Vito to practise his brushing skills.  This activity is one of his favourite as it invovles water as well.  I demonstrated the process of pouring water in the bowl, brushing the rocks, placing it on the towel to dry and putting them back again in the bowl.  See the short video below on how he followed the procedure:

2.  Swat the Sound Game.  I got this idea from one of my favourite blog NurturingLearning.  Julie made her son swat the letter sound that she makes.  We don’t have a sandpaper letter yet so I made these letter cards for us to use.  We enjoyed this activity very much. Vito is really NOT into letters yet, but when I integrated movements into letter activities, he’s really into it!  Take note that at this time, Vito knows the sounds already but we just need to practice because he seems to forget at times.  Next step here is doing the great alphabet object box to expand our literacy activities. (PS. We don’t own a fly swatter so I used our silicone spatula).

3.  Open and Close of Plastic Eggs.  Vito loves to open and close items, so I added this in our tray this month.  For extra challenge, he needs to put the gems inside the Easter eggs plastic containers and make sure that the eggs are properly closed so the gems will not drop.

4.  Cutting.  Vito is obsessed with scissors (for Kids)!  Whenever I give him cutting activities, I made sure that I supervise because I made him use real scissors now (for kids).  I have two plastic scissors but he doesn’t like them.  The paper strips (made from cardstock) were extras from our Rainbow Clouds Project.  I added lines for him to cut, but mostly he cuts freely… anywhere on the paper.

5.  Scooping Eggs.  I bought some of these for myself (Cabury Easter Eggs), but I decided to use it as a scooping material to see if he can manipulate the mini-scoop from Learning Resources.  The white trays are just ice cube trays.  This is also a good practice of one-to-one correspondence, a basic math skill that kids need to acquire.

6.  Colour Sorting.  More extra strips are used in this color sorting activity wherein we are learning about the colors of the rainbow.  I showed him how to sort the Learning Resources Bug Counters by placing the objects on top of the colored paper strips.  So aside from learning colours, kids will also get to practice their fine motor skills. (eye-hand coordination )

7.  Traditional Clothespin in Pail and Cards.  Inserting the traditional clothespin (wooden pins) into cards and mini-Easter buckets we got from the local store.

8.  Letters and Magnets.  I printed an entire set of alphabet daubers from DLTK because Vito is obsessed with placing magnets into the small circles.  I decided NOT to use DO-A-DOT markers this time so we can save ink by reusing the printed materials.  For the magnetic board, I’m using the one from Melissa and Doug Magnetic Pattern Set

9. Lacing.  He successfully laced an entire set of beads from Melissa & Doug Lacing Beads.  Watch the video here to see him in action!
