Montessori Inspired Vegetable Activities for Kids (Part 1)

We are all currently sick (since the weekend), we are battling cough and flu.  We spend our days resting, basically just sitting around doing random things like reading books, playing with toys or watch the kids’ favourite TV shows.  Because I was able to do some groceries last weekend, I decided to whip a vegetable activities for the boys yesterday using the ones I bought from the store.  My aim for these activities is to introduce healthy foods to the kids for fast recovery (from our sickness) and healthy diet.   The cards are from my shop and both of my kids love it!

We are using this book which I bought from Book Depository (FREE DELIVERY WORLD WIDE).  It is so informative and helpful in making the kids understand the different kinds of vegetables.

Just like any other books from the First Discovery series, it has beautiful illustrations of vegetables with transparent pages that shows the inside of  vegetables.

As an example, we focused on tomato.  Here I am showing Vito what the tomato looks like once you slice it into half. (BE SURE TO SUPERVISE THE KIDS WHEN USING KNIFE AND OTHER KITCHEN APPLIANCES)

Vito sliced it (with my help) using our kid friendly knife and he was totally surprised to see the inside of a tomato. See his reaction?  I was asking him to touch it and feel the inside together with the seeds but he doesn’t want to.  “I don’t like it” he said.  So instead, we just compared the real tomato to the ones in the book.  I did a similar activity with Mavi years ago, but we identified the parts of a tomato.  Vito and I will do this next year when he’s a bit older.

We also looked at the inside of an aubergine (eggplant) and allowed him to feel it and describe it.  “So puffy Mommy”

Then we moved to carrots, I tried teaching him how to use the peeler but he finds it difficult to peel the skin, so I just made him cut the carrots to pieces using a crinkle knife.

Then this morning, we worked on matching vegetables to the cards, a bit of color sorting and more.  Second part of this post is coming up next so stay tuned!
