Plants versus Animals Sorting Activity

I am so thankful for The Helpful Garden for providing us this printable (saved me a lot of time!).  Of all the plant and animal activities that we have done in the past, I have forgotten this one basic activity for Montessori botany and zoology: identifying plant and animals.

Being able to differentiate the two, the child can confidently work on future botany and zoology activities. The typical approach here is picking up a card and let the child tell whether it’s a plant or an animal, and he will place it in a rug or a sorting mat.  Vito finished this work breezily.  It might be because he knew about it already.  For years, during our nature walks we’ve been observing plants and trees, and similarly we talk about the animals like dogs, birds, and cats that we see in our neighborhood.  This is by far the best activity you can give to your child while observing the different organisms in his surroundings.

In our case, we didn’t stop there.  After Vito sorted out the cards, I told him if he could tell me something about the plants first, on why he thinks those images are plants.  We also talked about why he thinks the pictures on the right are animals.  To him, they are plants because it’s green, has flowers and leaves.  On the other hand, his definition of animals are creatures that can make sounds, move and are cute Open-mouthed smile
Look what came into the house!! A wasp!!! I have one happy boy here

This is just the start, a way of introducing but we will revisit this again before we moved on to the Kingdom of Life or Animal Kingdom.
