Polar Activities for Preschoolers

Here are our 9 activity trays this winter season, where in some days, Vito can finish 3 activities in a day while in some, almost none.  These ideas are good for about 2-3 weeks of learning.  Vito would also work on some non-polar activities in between, mostly practising reading with pink series, playing with our Grimm’s blocks, Legos, and just about anything he wants to do.  There are also spontaneous activities that come in between, mostly a product of discussion and as book extensions.  I mostly share these in my Instagram account, but if it’s post-worthy, you’ll be able to read it in the blog as well.

GEORGE LUCK ARCTIC PUZZLE
Vito loves puzzles so I just have to add this to our list of activities!  More about this puzzle here.

READING TENS
Vito is counting up to 100 and has been practising on his own for days now!  I mean, this just came out of the blue, all of a sudden he wanted to be able to count up to 100 so I reintroduced the Hundred Board and this has been his favourite math material as of the moment.  Now, he’s having a little bit of difficulty with saying the tens though.  I think he’s confusing it with the teens like “thirteen instead of thirty”.  He knows that both number are different but at times he calls the tens in teens.

So here I added a little twist to our counting activity and recognition of the tens.  Here, Vito will read the thermometer, mark the number and put the corresponding beads of the number.  You can get the ten beads here (Montessori 45 Golden Bead Bars of 10 with Box) and the cards here (Penguin Thermometer Learning Tens).

LETTER P SOUND GRID
This is a great activity to practise beginning letter sound with your kids!  Identifying the objects/pictures in the grid with beginning letter “p” using glass gems.  I made this material and will be available in the shop soon.

FEEDING PENGUINS AND FISHING GAME
This is a counting game, similar to cards and counters wherein Vito will catch the fish and feed it to the penguins.  The number of fish to catch depends on the number written in the penguin number card.

ANIMALS OF ANTARCTICA
Using the Animals of Antarctica learning pack, we are learning the animals that lives in Antarctica, other than penguins.  In my post here, I shared that we are using Safari Ltd Antarctica as additional material to the Safari Toob Penguins.

MATCHING CLOCK TO TIME
Here’s a fun way of matching clock to time, adding some twist to our traditional 3 part cards.  More details of the activity here (Penguin Themed Matching Clocks to Time).

HOW TO DRAW A PENGUIN
Aside from serving its purpose as a puzzle, we are also using our Montessori penguin puzzle as a drawing template.  This is an opportunity to practise writing and pencil grasp.
