Montessori Inspired North America Study: Maps and Flags

This is my ultimate guide in continent study of North America for elementary kids.  I use these with Mavi (8 years old) whenever I asked for a geography study.  To start with, it has three parts:

  • Maps and Flag Works
  • Landmarks and Animals
  • People, Culture, Tradition (etc)

This post is all about our map activities and flag works.

1.  Topography Map of North America.  I printed this map from here.  I love how it shows the elevated area of North America.  We will use this to identify the mountains, rivers and other landscapes of North America.

2.  Major Rivers and Map Plotting.  The river card are from my shop:  Major Rivers of the world and we will look for this in the topography map.  I then printed this outline map from Montessori Print Shop so Mavi and I can plot the major rivers of North America.

4.  Biomes Map.  For now, we are using this map (biomes of United States) from here.  I need to print a bigger version (full page A4 size)  for each of the continent  for Mavi to explore.

5.  Political Map and Pin Flags.  This is a famous activity for all Montessori homeschoolers and schools.  Here we will identify the countries of North America and plot the country flags.  I bought the map from Montessori Print Shop and the flags are from my shop:  Flags of North America.

I made a new set.  I printed and laminated the flags and then I attached a stick on the back using a sticky tape.  Mavi loved this!  To be able to pin the flag in the map, DO NOT LAMINATE the map and use a thick cork board underneath to secure the flags.

6.  Countries and Flags.  I made Mavi a new set of nomenclature cards (3 part cards) and this time, I added the location of the country in the cards itself.  Mavi loved it!  NOTE:  THIS NOMENCLATURE CARD IS A NEW VERSION AND NOT PART OF THIS PRODUCT)

I added an orange border on the 3 part cards so we can easily distinguish the continents.  I’ll make another set for Asia and Europe once I have the time Smile

And that’s about it for learning the location, countries and flags of North America.  Next on the series are the famous landmarks of North America that tells about its history.  We will also take a look at some of the animals that thrives in this area (and their habitats!).

Love it! Do you have the link for your flag 3 part cards that include the image of the country? This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for, for my class, and it would save me so much time! I couldn't find them when looking through your printables
