Continent Study: Europe Part I

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Here are the learning materials we have for our Europe Continent Study.

Poor man’s puzzle map of Europe.  We did a similar thing with Africa and will be doing this with other continents as well once we revisit them.  My son enjoys putting the map!   You can this map and other continents from here.

Of course, there’s the pinning of flags to familiarize the locations of European countries.

3 part cards of flags of Europe.  You can get it from here, together with map pin flags and with some other flag learning materials.

And of course, his favorite… identifying the animals of Europe!  My animals figures are from Safari Toobs and Schleich.

Here’s a closer look of how my animal cards/fact sheets look like.  If you’re interested, you can get it from here.

I also have cards for European cuisines.  I included this in our study as we have tried some of the foods here and at times I prepare them at home.  One of which is my ever favorite Paella.DSC_0980

Since we’ve been learning Arts and Artists, my son is already familiar with famous painters from Europe.  So I decided to include other famous people from this continent.DSC_0985

We also have some Euro bills and UK pounds.  I bought these at ELC during the Christmas Sale Season :)  Then I also printed 10 random images of Europe.  I’m putting it on a file with caption so I can share it for free.

And we also have pictures from our travels around Europe.  I will use this to talk about the landmarks and the places we’ve been to on my next post.

Will be posting other materials, activities and freebies based on this study soon, so watch out for it.

Math: Addition Strip

Monday, April 22, 2013

Last week we started working on our Addition Strip.  I wanted to test Mavi if he’s into it, and surprisingly he enjoys it!  As you know, I am not Montessori trained (not yet), so I am relying on free Montessori albums with regards to “how to’s” and I am currently using this site as my primary resource of information.

Anyway, all materials here are homemade.  I used pink and light blue strips instead of the conventional red and blue because I ran out of papers.

I also printed this equation strips.  Since this is just a “trial” period, I didn’t introduce Chart 1 and Chart 2 yet.  We will work on it in our next session.DSC_0912

He loves picking up the blue and pink strips based on the equation.

We worked on the five equations and gave him 3 more for him to work on by himself.  DSC_0926

When we’re done, he told me he loves it!  And for that we will have a full lesson this week (we’re doing Math thrice a week now) and we’re using Chart 1 and Chart 2.  More on that on my next post :)

PS.  I am contemplating on purchasing Montessori-Math materials and Karen Tyler’s Math Album.  Creating materials can be tedious and time consuming at times.  They’re quite pricey though but I guess it will be all worth-it if you’re son/kids enjoy using it right?

Happy Monday!

Farm Families (FREE Sorting Cards!)

Thursday, April 18, 2013

(Click the image for the link)
Last week we studied farm animal families and my son had a wonderful time learning the names of each family member.  And later on I tested his knowledge by sorting out the cards whether they are mommies, daddies or babies.

Feel free to download the file, it includes control charts and sorting cards.
