Continent Study: South America (with PRINTABLES)

Monday, July 2, 2012

Saw lots of books about South America a few weeks ago, so I decided to have it for our Continent Study.

South America Continent Study Books

Books About South America

  • South America (CONTINENTS OF THE WORLD)
  • Exploring South America (Exploring Continents)
  • Brazil (Destination Detectives)
  • Brazil (Changing World)
  • South America's Most Amazing Animals (Animal Top Tens)
  • South America's Most Amazing Plants (Plant Top Tens)
I love these books as well for they’ve got lots of pictures showing the culture, food, and lifestyle of people in Brazil.  My son enjoyed reading books about children in different culture.

And these were my favorite!  They were very specific and informative.  Suited enough for a home study of South America.

South American Plants and Animals

Map and Flags of South America

Of course, studying a continent includes map.  Here’s my little boy, familiarizing with the South America map.

And I made flag pins as well!  He’s interested in maps lately and loves identifying each one.  I love the fact that he can now associate a flag to a country and on a specific location on the map.  For the map and flags of south america you can check the following printable from my shop, South America in a Nutshell and Flags of South America.

Landmarks of South America

I also made the landmarks.  I only made a few since this topic is not really an interest of his. You can get the Landmarks of South America printable from here.

Montessori Inspired Landmarks of South America 3 Part Cards and Fact Cards

Animals of South America

From the books above, I made a summary of facts about South American animals.  You can get the FREE South American Animals Facts Cards by clicking HERE.

As we discussed each animal, I showed him a video of each so he can see how they behave and what they are like in real life.

Since I’ve got Rainforest Safari Toob, we also played matching game using my DIY control cards and the animal figures.  The rainforest control cards were from a printable which you can get from my shop (200+ Toobs Matching Cards Bundle Pack).

Plants of South America

Same as the animal fact cards, I also made one for the plants of South America.  You can get the FREE Plants of South America Fact Cards by clicking HERE.

Just before we wrap-up our study, my son matched the landmarks to their location using the flags :)

South America Landmarks and Flags Matching Activity

I wanted to cook some South American foods as well, but I discovered that some of our native foods (Filipino) are similar to that in South America.  So instead of showing him pictures, I might as well prepare those foods for him.

Hope you like it! You can also check a newer activity from here, Continent Study of South America.
