Autumn Nature Finds and How We Use Them

Saturday, September 17, 2016

We’ve been blessed with a beautiful weather last week. It’s actually pretty warm and sunny for September in Ireland which is quite unusual.  So I grabbed the opportunity to walk the boys everyday and collect nature objects.  We placed them in a basket and displayed it on the shelf for exploration and learning.

Our shelf now looks like this.  Vito loves the wooden tree I have on display.  The autumn cards are part of our Early Literacy Pack and we own the books.

I have these books for years now, Mavi used these when he was a preschooler and it’s so good that Vito gets to enjoy them too.

As we explore our nature objects, Vito would match them to our beautiful autumn cards.  He’s into matching right now!  While matching is for a 34 month old child, Mavi who is 8 years old loves reading the cards.

These are just some of the cards though, so we have to bring home more nature objects to match with the other cards. It’s like a scavenger hunt!

A Conker!! The boys were so fascinated with this, especially Vito. A Conker is a seed of the horse chestnut tree and these usually falls off around the autumn season. It’s spiky though, so better be careful in case you encounter this. I see them a lot of times cracked or opened without nuts most probably because squirrels have taken them off the night before.  It’s amazing how the shells are scattered around without their nuts!

We opened one of our Conkers and he was delighted to remove the seed!

Of course we didn’t have a squirrel with us so we just used our Schleich.  Vito finds the squirrel so cute.

Using our senses to explore the nature objects! Touch, feel and smell!

And here are the treasures we have after exploring them!

There are so many things you can learn by just observing nature and examining the things it offers.  Hopefully the weather will be on our side so we can do a lot more walking in the afternoon.

More on autumn related post in the coming days! Stay tuned!
