8 Christmas Tray Activities for Kids

Thursday, December 1, 2016

We are currently sick (Vito and I), but the good news is Vito is on his way to recovery (antibiotics) while I’m still suffering from cough and flu.  Though I don’t have any fever but I don’t feel like doing anything at all, just wanted to lie down, sleep or just relaxing my mind from anything. For me to be able to rest and recover, I decided to come up with Christmas tray activities for Vito to work independently with minimal supervision.

MontessoriChristmasBlog

1.  Beading and Color Sorting.  Mavi and I used to do this and he loved it.  It’s a great activity for color recognition and hand-eye coordination.  I tried it with Vito, he showed enthusiasm at first, but got tired in the middle of the activity. I saved his work and will reintroduce it again some other time so we can complete it.  If you try this, make sure to supervise your kids as the beads are so tiny and dangerous when swallowed.  I’m using metallic beads and pipe cleaners here.

2.  Christmas Card Stamping.  Mavi is writing 19 cards to each of his friends, and my 3 years old mimics his brother’s activity, thus he also wanted to do the same.  These Christmas cards were of last year’s so I gave it to him to work on.  He’s into stamping these days, so I made him use these jumbo stamping letters (using the letters from his name) and the stamping pad from Melissa and Doug.  Of course, we will also be using colored markers and pens, and glitter glue (if available).

3.  Cards and Counters with Christmas Bells.  Typical cards and counter type and we used Mavi’s bells from a school project.  I made the Christmas numbers, and if you’re interested you can download it from the link below.

4.  BINGO Game.  My main purpose here is to introduce Vito to some Christmas vocabulary words and Christmas symbols.  We haven’t used this yet but I know he’ll like it, especially using the spinner!

5.  Christmas Patterning.  I am so excited to introduce this to my 3 years old.  We are using the link cubes I bought from Singapore but you can purchase similar ones from Amazon.  We’ll start with the simple patterns (2 colours) and as he progress, we will try the 3 colour patterns. And yes, we’re using Christmas colours of course!

6.  Playdough Decors.  Homemade playdough, plus holiday patterns and some jewels equals hours of fun and imaginative play!  I could not believe that my boy actually loves this and it’s his current favourite tray!  He would work on this in the morning after breakfast, while I work on some chores.  Vito doesn’t mouth objects anymore, so it is safe to leave him with ornaments like these in the picture but as I mentioned earlier, we still need to supervise them.

7.  Cutting Strips.  This keeps him busy for a long time!  He identifies and count the trimmed images which makes this activity even more worth-it to prepare.  What do we do with the images? We reuse them for patterning or gluing activity!

8.  Counting Clip Cards.  Similar to Cards and Counters type of activity but this time we’re using peg to practise hand eye coordination and fine motor skills.   Please excuse if some of my photos are dim.  It gets dark here as early as 3PM in the afternoon so taking good pictures is a struggle.

And that’s it!  I hope these will keep him busy while I’m sick and busy for the holidays.  If you have any questions regarding the materials used and printables, just leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
