Preschool Unit Ocean Learning Pack

Friday, June 15, 2018

Summer is finally here, and look what I have for you! 30 OCEAN THEME ACTIVITIES for your PRESCHOOLERS are all about sea life and the ocean!  This learning pack is a collection of activities we worked on for years at home with my two boys and has everything you need for weeks or a month-long of learning.  These are engaging, educational, and, most importantly, fun!  Most of the activities encourage the parent/teacher to use manipulatives, promoting hands-on and play-based learning.  These activities are designed for 3-4 years old (preschoolers or kindergarten), and they aim to immerse the child in the concepts rather than force them to memorize them.

Here’s a glimpse of the activities included in this learning pack:

OCEAN THEME: FEED THE SHARK NUMBER REPRESENTATION

The child will count and sort out the different number representations and match them to the shark number symbols. Vito loves this activity, as I mentioned in our FEED THE SNAKE version (which is FREE FOR DOWNLOAD!)

OCEAN THEME: CUTTING STRIPS

CUTTING STRIPS
Children love cutting, and I added these strips to provide the child/student with the opportunity to miss.  The strips are easy to cut and are perfect for younger children to practice their cutting “snippets” of paper skills.

OCEAN THEME: TEN FRAMES MATCH

TEN FRAMES MATCH
We used this activity in so many ways.  First, we used the bucket number symbol as a number card to provide the exact number of fish represented by the number.  We used the Fish Counters from Learning Resources. These are highly recommended!

Next, we used the ten frame cards to match them to the number symbols.  The child can count the number of fish counters and see if they match the count in the ten frame cards to check for their work.

TEN FRAMES MATCH
Here’s my son’s finished work.  If fish counters are unavailable, you can use any manipulatives like glass nuggets, pebbles, pompoms etc.

OCEAN THEME: BEGINNING LETTER-SOUND MATCH

BEGINNING LETTER SOUND MATCH
Continuing our practice for beginning letter sounds, an A to Z beginning letter sound puzzle is provided in the learning pack.

OCEAN THEME: NUMBER PUZZLES

NUMBER PUZZLES
Our ocean-themed learning pack has number puzzles for 1 to 5 and 1 to 10.  You can start working with 1 to 5 and move on to 1 to 10 as your child progresses.  This is a beautiful activity for reinforcing order, counting, number recognition, and number progression concepts.

OCEAN THEME: FISH SHAPES PLAYDOUGH MATS

FISH SHAPES PLAYDOUGH MAT
Who doesn’t love playdough?  My son is obsessed with it!  So I integrated that into our learning pack and made some shapes forming activities, so we could practice identifying conditions and making them as well.  This activity is great for little hands and for strengthening hand muscles!  Your kids will love squishing, rolling, and flattening the dough to form the shapes.

The simple color matching activity of ocean animals.  Printing instruction is provided so you can adjust the sizes of these puzzles.

In this counting activity, we used our Safari Toob figures (Ocean and Coral Reef), but any manipulatives will do.
