Playing Flockmen in Five Fun Ways

Saturday, June 1, 2019

By now, you have heard about Flockmen.  You've seen it everywhere, from Instagram, to Facebook and homeschool moms and Montessori/Waldorf schools and families.  Flockmen are wooden toys which take the form of little men and are used for open ended play.  By default, most people use them for building structures by stacking Flockmen together.  But in our home we use them in a lot of ways and I'm going to highlight five of these fun ways we use our Flockmen.

Playing Flockmen in Five Fun Ways
Before I proceed, allow me to share why the kids and I love Flockmen.  First, the boys love stacking the wooden toys together.  It's so different from other wooden toys because these doesn't take the usual geometric shapes (cube, prism etc).  It has a shape of a man and it's so appealing to kids! Second, the possibilities of stacking and forming structures using Flockmen is endless and challenging.  Challenging because if you're not doing it right, they will fall apart, frustrating to kids but as I said challenging.  This gives children an opportunity for concentration and mastery of their fine motor and engineering skills.  Finally, the wooden men are sturdy,  well made, and high quality. I can't believe that they lasted this long, considering how the boys would always knock them out :D

These are perfect for stacking activities, a great way to develop fine motor, engineering skills, and concentration for little ones.  A pattern is available from their site which you can download (the instruction is included in the set) or your child can just do a free play.

If your kids love to count, the Flockmen set is great as counters!

Playing with Flockmen: NUMBER AND LETTER FORMATION (LITERACY)

Challenge your little ones to create letters using Flockmen.  Here's Vito making a letter for V for his name.

Playing with Flockmen: FREE PLAY!

This got to be the boys' favorite activity with Flockmen, knocking them out with either Nerf or with wooden Grimm's balls.  Weather permits, we take our Flockmen outside in the backyard for a fun knocking game!
