My 6 year old is eager to learn more about his teeth and dental health after we visited our dentist yesterday for a routine checkup. So I prepared some meaningful and age appropriate activities for him at home and had a an amazing time discussing dental health with him.
Below are some of the activities and ideas that you can try with your kids or students in case you wanted to do a Dental Themed Unit. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to leave a comment or send me an email.
Dental Unit: Primary and Permanent Teeth Development
Kids absolutely love learning about their teeth, on how many they have, how and when they are going to loose their baby teeth etc. Start discussing the two sets of teeth development, the primary or baby teeth and then the permanent teeth. This can be done by showing them charts/diagrams which you can easily source out from the internet. At home, we use our Science Time Dentistry Deluxe Kit which contains the two models in 3D so it was easier to introduce it to Vito.
I also have a PERMANENT TEETH DEVELOPMENT 3 PART CARDS which you can use and download for free. Just click here to get your copy.
Dental Unit: Types of Teeth
Here I introduced the different types of teeth, its shapes and functions.
I made these cards and you can download them from here.
Dental Unit: What's Inside Your Tooth?
Because of a recent filling, I showed Vito the anatomy of a tooth so I can further discuss which part of the the tooth gets broken and why the gums become swollen or painful.
This TOOTH CROSS SECTION 3 PART CARDS is available in my shop.

Dental Unit: What is a Cavity?
Here's an illustration of how cavities develop and why it's important that we show this to the kids!Dental Unit: Taking Good Care of Your Teeth
By now kids know that brushing their teeth keeps them healthy and clean and prevents the development of plaque and cavities. So we also discussed certain foods that will strengthen our teeth and surprisingly Vito recognized that some of these are proteins!
