Learning about the History of Telephones for Kids

Monday, February 24, 2020

One of our favorite subjects is history! I suddenly had an urge to tackle the historical timeline of the common objects that we use in our daily lives like money, phones, computers, etc.  This came to my mind when my eldest and I were talking about the evolution of computers, from the gigantic machines to the tablets.  Though this is more of an elementary work, I designed this resource for preschoolers, kindergartens, and early childhood learners.

In this post, I will feature the history of telephones which we recently worked on (Vito asked to work on this set first).  All of the printable resources featured in this post are all available in our History of Telephones - Timeline and Ordering Activities.

Difference between elementary work and early childhood

  • History resources for elementary work focuses on details, knowing the facts and gathering information through research.  This is not yet available in our shop, but will be working on it soon.
  • My history resources for preschoolers, kindergartens and early childhood learners focuses on visual activities (matching), reading practice, introducing the concept of evolution and change, ordering activities and integrating fine motor skills.  No definition card is included in this set.

Cut and stick the images in the blank timeline diagram. You can use the control diagram as a guide with younger children or without the control diagram for a more challenging work with older kids.

History of Telephones: Ordering Activities

Two sets are provided: ordering cards (posters printed into card size) and the picture cards (can be scaled to smaller cards).

Vito used a ribbon to make the "Timeline" and he also picked his favorite color for this.

History of Telephones: 3-Part Cards

These are perfect for matching and for beginning reading.  Vito loves reading the label cards now as he attempts to read "difficult" words.  This is my Montessori 3-part cards tray.  I usually use this version but Vito insisted on using the tray this time in the shelf.

History of Telephones: Pocket Charts

This is perfect for group presentations but I used the cards as display at home.  Currently it is displayed in our shelf but will move it to the larger pocket chart in hallway.

History of Telephones: Coloring Pages for Fine Motor Skills

Most kids love to color, including my boy, so I decided to add this in the learning pack for additional activities and fine motor skill practice.  We love using Stockmar wax crayons at home for coloring!
