A Math Racing Game for Preschoolers

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

Vito always wanted to join us whenever we play board games but we don’t allow him because it’s too much for him.  Too many cards (and paper money) to scatter, dice which he couldn’t figure out how to use and what to do with it and so much more.  So when I was making Autumn-Themed Math Activities, I made sure that I include a game that’s suitable for his age.  DSC_1256

And this is what I exactly made him. He called it Squeak Squeak because its a game about squirrels getting the nut.  This racing game is very simple, so easy for pre-schoolers to play.   Yes, to them they’re just playing but little do they know that they’re learning basic math concepts like number recognition, counting, 1:1 correspondence and the best part, they get to play it with their brothers/sisters!       DSC_1197   DSC_1198

So what do you need to play this game?

  • Race for the Nut Game from our Autumn Themed Math Activities
  • Dice or Spinner (the spinner is included in our printable)
  • Tokens (We used the squirrel and lynx figure from Schleich)

We used a foam die which I bought from a craft store.  If none is available, you can use the spinner that I included in the learning pack.  Your kids will enjoy using it!

This is how Vito prepares for the game. He’s preparing to toss his die.  Love that mannerism of sticking his tongue out. LOL.  I forgot to mention that this also teaches the child on how to wait for his turn! We made him understand that the game is all about taking turns as well.

So I would make him identify the number in the die and we counted together as he moves his token in the printable.  This part is perfect for teaching 1:1 correspondence.

I also added some obstacles and power boosters along the way. The boys and I had so much playing the game and I’m definitely sure that this will be the kids favourite math material for the month of September!
