Writing Practise for Preschoolers

Sunday, October 16, 2016

Vito had a sudden interest on tracing and writing letters last week.  I didn’t see it coming.  He knows all his letter sounds, but is not ecstatic over letter (phonics) activities like sorting objects according to beginning letters. So I’m shelving those activities at the moment.  Right now, he just wanted to trace and attempt (or pretend) to write letters.

Writing Practise for Preschoolers

It all started with this book (Montessori: Letter Work).  As I mentioned in my Instagram account, I sat him on my lap and we would trace the letters together.  He loved it!  He loves tracing more than he loves making the letter sound.  I think this is because he knows all the 26 sounds in the alphabet and doesn’t want to do the same thing over and over again.

Someone likes to trace letters He prefers doing this while sitting on my lap. #kbnmoms #thepinayhomeschooler #preschool #preschooler #toddler #totschool #toddleractivities #earlylearning #homeschool #montessorichild #montessoriathome #2yearsold #35months #momblogger #kidsofinstagram  #learnandplay #homeschooling #learningmaterials

And because I don’t have Montessori sandpaper letters yet, I decided to make our own tracing letters.  These mats are intended for tracing with the use of dry erase pens, chalk markers  or washable pens like ones we are using here.  I still plan to get him sandpaper letters but that would be later as I don’t have the budget for it yet and knowing Vito, I know he’ll play or eat with the salt rather than do writing.

Anyways, these letter mats were a total hit! Just when I thought he would just trace the letters, he started (1) naming the objects in the mat saying “R for rainbow”, “a for apple” etc and (2) he would identify the big and small letter like “big R, small r”.  He would say that repetitively pointing to the corresponding letters.

And we also used them with playdough!

I love it when he is discovering new interests! I wonder what will it be next?
