A Penguin Project for Mom and Kids

Friday, January 13, 2017

Oh I am so happy how these turned out!! The boys and I enjoyed making these penguins using simple art materials.  It took us around an hour to finish everything (with a stubborn preschooler) and we were totally blown by the result!  This art project was from Deep Space Sparkle, one of my favourite artsy website and my go to for painting projects.

MATERIALS

  • white cardstock
  • black cardstock
  • marker pens (we used Sharpies)
  • orange cardstock
  • water colour paints (you can use tempera paints too)
  • glue and scissor
  • paintbrushes

PROCEDURE

  1. Using the white cardstock, create a background of colors. You can either choose warm or cool colors or a mixture of both.  It seems that watercolor paints dry easily compared to tempera paints, so we might be using this medium more often, especially this cold winter months.

  2. Once the background is dry, create your paper penguins using the black, white and orange cardstock.  Give your kids some idea on how penguins look like and let them decide on what design they should make.

  3. (Optional) Aside from penguins, you can also add some other objects in the background like icebergs or snow.
  4. Decorate your penguins once they are assembled.  Add hats, scarf, ribbons, buttons and whatever you feel like doing.
  5. To make it festive, we added snow! We use Qtips to make those snowy effects.

TIPS

  • Work and participate with your kids. Be part of the project making rather than just directing them.  I observed that Mavi is more giddy and inspired when I work with them.  This is an opportunity to interact with your kids, exchange ideas, etc.
  • If you are working multiple kids, I high suggest that each one should have their own set materials.  Yes, this means I have two sets of scissors, markers, paints and brushes.  My preschooler is currently in the “mine” stage and doesn’t want to share.  We are still working on that part, of practising how to share.  For now, to avoid unnecessary commotion while working, I provided them with their own materials.
  • Always assist the younger ones in cutting.

These are really good right?  Why not try any of these!  And for more art projects visit DSS, it’s a fabulous website!
