B4FIAR: Jesse Bear What Will You Wear

Sunday, September 10, 2017

We are continuing our Five in a Row because Vito is loving some of the stories in the book list.  In this post, I’m sharing activities to go along with the Jesse Bear What Will You Wear by Nancy White Carlstrom.  Note, I only make or prepare activities in line with the books that he loves.  So when I read Jesse Bear to him, he immediately love it because he can relate to the story.  He has routines too similar to Jesse Bear (playing, eating and waiting for Daddy) and staying with his Mom all day.

Anyway here are the activities we worked on to explore the subject areas of Jesse Bear What Will You Wear.  Note, this was a 2-week long of rowing.  The activities here were mostly done in the morning and we only worked on one activity a day, and the rest we spend it outdoors or Vito would do something else (like work on his traditional Montessori materials).

Letter b Objects

As we read the book each day (night time), we would identify objects beginning with ‘b’ sound in the morning.  This is for letter recognition, phonics and preparation for reading.  This is usually our set-up for the object box, a sandpaper letter and language objects (Beginning Reading: Language Objects and Activities).

Mazes

Sensitive period for mazes.  He loves to work on these everyday!  I made these mazes about bears to go along with our book.  I shared this for free and you can get it from here, FREE Letter B for Bear Mazes.  He didn’t like to practise writing letters so this was a good writing practise for him instead, especially with fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and pencil grip.  We are using chalk markers but I will eventually consider dry erase markers.  Note:  laminate the sheets if you want to reuse them.

Pattern Recognition

I introduced the concept of patterning for the first time and he enjoyed it!  Pattern recognition is an important skill in mathematics and abstract reasoning.  In younger children, it is introduced in activities like exploring and making patterns similar to the the ones we currently have.  Here, I made pattern strips of bear counters and Vito has to follow or continue creating the pattern.  As he progresses, I will introduce the different levels of patterning so he can further improve his skills of pattern recognition.  We are using the bear counters from Learning Resources.

Beginning Letter Sound

Vito can almost memorize the book!  To expand his vocabulary and practise reading comprehension, I made this beginning letter sound cards based on the words in the book.  We are using our moveable alphabet in this activity and the beginning sound cards strips I made.  If you are looking for a learning material on beginning letter sounds from A to Z you can it out here, Beginning Letter Phonics Cards.

 Cutting

These strips were made for either tracing and cutting but he wanted to cut them instead.  You can get children’s scissors from here.

QTips Letter Trace

I remember Vito used to love this activity when he was younger so I reintroduced it again.  He seems to enjoy it at first but instead of filling the dots in the letter, he painted everything brown.
