The Montessori Geometric Sticks

Saturday, October 21, 2017

We finally get to use our Montessori Geometric Sticks now that Mavi is learning about polygons, triangles and angles.  You can purchase this fantastic learning material at any Montessori shop or in Amazon.  My boys and I are fascinated with this material.  There’s so much we can do with it, from building plane geometric shapes, to letters, and artworks!

What is Montessori Geometric Sticks?

Montessori Geometric Sticks
The Montessori Geometry Stick material is a geometry tool that is used in an elementary environment for the study of lines, angles, and plane geometric shapes.  You also need to have a cork board (the set doesn’t come with it), or self healing board so you can “pin” the sticks/lines to form the shapes.

The set includes the following:
  • 10 sets of colored sticks varying in sizes
  • 1 set of sticks in natural wood color
  • Some sticks within the set have holes on both ends and some sticks and two or three sticks within each set have holes all along the stick.
  • brads, thumb tacks
  • measuring angles
  • semi-circle plastics

How to Use Geometric Sticks Material

Currently, we are using it to learn about lines and polygons.  I created this Polygons Learning Pack which includes 3 part cards and booklet so we can easily explore simple closed curve figures and polygons.  You can find more details about the product here.

I will dedicate a post on how I taught Mavi the polygons but for now, I’m just going to show you how the books explored the sticks freely and with the use of our polygons learning pack booklet.

For Vito, he is using the sticks to make shapes and letters.  Note that the set comes with pins, so it is very important that you supervise your child whenever they use this material.

Mavi on the otherhand is using the booklet to recreate the shapes.  He is mastering his polygons as of the moment.  The set comes with different sizes of sticks so you can use it to form different polygons (2D shapes with sides of same or different lengths).

As I mentioned we are using our Polygons booklet to aid us in our learning of plane (2D) shapes.
