Preschool Learning Letter L Activities

Saturday, October 14, 2017

Presenting our letter “l” activities!  We’ve started “letter of the week” kind of activities since September because of Vito’s interest in letter sounds and reading.  We’ve been reading FIAR books over the summer and this led him to further explore words and language activities.

Letter ‘l’  Object Basket

Language objects are a great way to learn letter sounds.

Content of our Letter “l” basket are:

How we use these?  Simple!  During the first presentation,  I asked Vito to sit with me on the table so we can explore the objects that has ‘lllll’ sound in the beginning.  Then I take one object, say it’s name with emphasis on the beginning sound. For example, I take a lion… and say “this is lion.  lllllion.  A lion starts with ‘lll’ sound.”  I do the same with the rest of the objects.

Other days that we would work on these, he’s the one doing a presentation, like he would simply pick one object at a time and name the objects with emphasis on the beginning sound.  For example, he would pick the ladder and say “llll is for ladder”.

You can play “I Spy Games” too once the child is familiar to multiple letter sounds.

Books Used

We are mainly using Moncure books for our learning letter activities.  So the week that we learned about letter ‘l’ we used the books My 'l’ Book and the Why Do Leaves Change Color.

Other Activities

Objects Sorting. A current favourite in the house.  Vito now enjoys sorting objects according to their beginning letter sound.  We are using sandpaper letters in this activity.  Here Vito is sorting objects with a,l and b beginning letter sounds.  You check a similar activity here.

L for Leaves

Leaf Shapes.  We learned about the different leaf shapes.  This printable has been used many times by the boys now and is available here.  We collected leaves from the neighborhood and laminated some of them to preserve the color and shape.  We then use it to identify the shapes.

Leaf Prints.  Introduced Vito to leaf printing using crayons and he loved it!  We used the leaves that were not laminated, some old crayons and papers for this activity.

I am surprised of how well he made this printing!  I presented how it works at first, and instructed him to put a lot of pressure so he can capture the lines perfectly.  This is not just a work of art but a product of motor skill (maximum effort).

Letter ‘l’ Activity Sheets

We worked on these maze sheets because Vito enjoys solving mazes.

Beginning Sound Maze.  This is to identify the picture that begins with the letter ‘l’.  This is not yet available in the shop (will upload soon!).

Find small letter ‘l’ in the maze.  Vito loves mazes so he enjoyed this activity as well!  You can get this maze activity from here.

Preparing our letter ‘l’ Booklet

At the end of our letter ‘a’ activities, we worked on this booklet.  He loved coloring the pictures!! I was surprised that he diligently finished everything and was so proud after we assembled his book!  We should try this again on our next letter.

By the way, he wanted to use these Crayola markers,  I wanted him to try these pencils next!

What’s the timeframe for learning each letter?

We don’t have a timeframe it really depends on his progress and interest.  There are times he can finish the activities in 3 days, others in a week or more.

We would also work on this cards to play sorting games of letter sounds.

What’s the order of your learning letters?

This idea was from Montessori Journey and I’ve been using this since 2010:

ramf-bitg

cusn-polh

dexqyjkwvh

But this is just my guide and my default selection.  Mostly, we will work on a letter based on his favourite book, season or current interest.
