Montessori Inspired Space Themed Learning Activities

Saturday, February 10, 2018

We are moving to new things this week as Vito’s interest is starting to be directed more about his body and senses.  For the past few weeks, we’ve been doing work about the moon, the planets, and space.  Here’s a roundup of our activities in learning about the solar system and space in general (in no particular order).

PLANETS COLOR MATCHING

We love doing this together!!! I got this idea from one of my favourite IG account Momducator.  We used our Montessori Color Set 3 and our homemade printed planets.  A great activity for visual sense.

LEARNING ABOUT DAY AND NIGHT

This is an activity to demonstrate day and night.  We used a small torch and our trusted medium sized globe.  Vito loved his Lego Space Shuttle and he often used this whenever we talked about the Earth and how it flies into space during the day, and see the Earth at night.  This is best done at night just before bedtime.

STAR CONSTELLATIONS

I have been sharing a lot of pictures of our constellation activities in Instagram.  It took Vito days to get over this! To know more about our fun activity of pin poking and constellation matching read about it here (Hands-on Learning of Constellations for Preschoolers).

PLANETS AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Another favorite! Vito has been fascinated with the idea of “hot planets”, “cold planets”, and “livable planets” that he kept asking what each of this planet has or what is it like to live there!  So to get to know more about them (after reading books like Atlas of Space), we tried to identify each one using the 3 period lesson with the use of The Solar System and Space 3 part cards.  Each time we identified a planet, I would also describe it (read along the booklet).

PLANETARIUM

This Discovery Planetarium was given to Mavi by a family friend and and Vito loves this to bits! We use it at night to look for the constellations that we have learned from our previous activities.

SPACE THEMED TEN FRAMES FOR COUNTING AND WRITING NUMBERS

Adding math to our themed activities has always been my practice as Vito loves to count.  This is our Space Themed Ten Frames, and we use our black gem nuggets as counters.  He had fun counting the images in the picture and writing the numbers!

MOON PHASES

Before the blue moon few days ago, we had a talk about the moon phases.  Read about the activity here (Phases of the Moon Activity with the Learning Pack).

PLAYDOUGH SPACE

Non stop play with this playdough space we made at home.  It is so easy to make! Just put an ample amount of glitters in your black (or homemade) playdough and that’s it!  We used it in a lot of ways, but Vito specifically loves to form it like this.  Planet figures we used here are from Safari Toobs (Safari Ltd Safariology The Solar System).

He even worked extra hard during the weekend to make another set and matched them to our cards.

SPACE FLOOR PUZZLE

Finally, our floor puzzles has also been a favorite.  He usually works on this at night when Mavi is doing homework.  I have featured this so many times in our IG stories, and you can see it in my IG newsfeed too.  So we were working on this puzzle for awhile now and it helps in the visualization of how our space looks like.  This puzzle is so beautiful!  We love it!
