Solar System and Space Preschool Mini Unit

Monday, November 5, 2018

The outerspace and solar system are one of my kids’ favorite topics at home.  They have always been fascinated with how the universe works and they love knowing their place in it.  Vito has been learning a lot about planets lately.  We worked on Space-themed activity trays last year but because he is older now, he is inquiring more and curious about it.  We worked on a couple of activities like our 3 part cards and reading the Planetarium book at night.  I also managed to make him a Waseca-biome inspired cosmic blocks which demonstrate his place in the universe.  Now, to go along with our activities, I created this mini unit pack which are extension activities that will enrich his knowledge and interest on the solar system and outerspace.  The learning pack contains 10 (plus 3 BONUS!) learning activities that your kids will surely enjoy!  Below are some previews of what to expect from our learning material.

Outerspace and Solar System Preschool Mini Unit Activities
Our Space Mini Unit Preschool Pack includes 10 preschool learning activities that are designed for preschoolers, pre-k, and kindergarteners.

You will need some of these materials which provide opportunities for hands-on learning and fine motor skills:
  • Colored wooden pegs, snap cubes or counters
  • Dry erase pens, chalk markers, writing pencils or colored pencils
  • Crayons
  • kid-friendly scissors
  • (optional) educational toys to go along with these materials like Safari Toob Planets and Space Toobs

Space Themed Beginning Letter Clipcards

This is one of our favorite activity, identifying the names of heavenly bodies and identifying their beginning letter.  This is also one of the methods that we use to learn vocabulary words and familiarize with the names of the planets.

Space Themed Spot and Cover Game

This is a fun color matching and identification activity that requires manipulatives like snap cubes.  Give the color code and the child will “cover” the planets with the indicated manipulative.  This is another way we practice identifying planets and other space objects.  A blank code is also provided so you can create your own color codes for this activity.

Space Themed Matching and Memory Game

This is a Montessori-inspired game of matching activity and memory game.  The child will match the pictures in the cards to the matching sheets.  Also, you can use the cut-out cards to play memory game, you just need to cut the card page twice so each picture will have a pair.

Space Themed Reading Thermometer and Learning Tens

Vito enjoyed our penguin themed temperature reading activity early this year so I made another set for him (Space Themed Thermometer Reading Activity).  This is a great practice for learning how to recognize and read numbers in “tens”.

Space Themed Number Puzzles

Vito loved this activity too!  It’s a great way to memorize the order of the planets in the solar system, together with the ordering of numbers too.

Space Themed BONUS Materials in the Learning Pack

When you purchase the mini unit pack, I have 3 bonus materials that are only exclusive in this learning set.  One of which is our space themed color patterning activity that we use with our snap cubes.  This is a tool for practicing pattern recognition, a basic skill in mathematics.

These and more, are all included in our Space Prechool Mini Unit!  Check our TPT shop for more space-themed learning materials.
