Complete Guide to Insect Study for Grade-Schoolers

Wednesday, June 17, 2015

We just concluded our study of insects and oh boy, both Mavi and Vito had a wonderful time learning all about these creatures!  We’re having zoology (animal study) for this month (12 Months of Montessori Series) and I’m going to give you a complete guide on how to study insects with your kids.

Insect FBN

What is an insect?
Start your unit study by learning what is an insect. Put it simply, it is an animal that has 6 legs with segmented bodies. And yes please, spiders are definitely NOT insects.  Now for Mavi to have a wider understanding of this subject, I've set up a sorting activity of the 4 major groups of the Arthropods.  Since we've done this last year, Mavi has a prior knowledge of the difference between insects and spiders.  He got confused with the crab though, if its either arachnids or crustaceans LOL.  Initially he placed it in the Arachnids Smile  These animal figures were from Safari Toob Insects and Insect Lore.

The Life Cycle of an Insect
Now after learning about the animals that belong to the insect family,  we looked into the life cycles of an insect.  Here we talked about the insects that undergo “complete metamorphosis” and those with “incomplete metamorphosis”.  Note complete metamorphosis means, it has the stages of: egg-larva-pupa-adult.

Materials here are Insect Lore Life Cycle of Butterfly and Ladybug

Parts of an Insect
We also learned about the different parts of an insect. I have a separate post on this one and you read it here or click the image below.Parts of an Insect PIN

Insect Habitats and Bug Hunting
I created guides on hunting insects in different habitats.  We have insects found in woodlands (in the forest), those found in rivers and lakes, the ones found everywhere and in the meadows/fields.  We used these guides as we go “bug hunting”.

Insect Study Guide
We were able to catch a few insects like ladybird (escaped from our net after a few hours), this unidentified insect in the outdoor stairs and ants.
Insect Study Guide
Vito was fascinated with ants! He also had a separate insect study for toddlers.

FREE Summer Themed Grid Number Games

Friday, June 5, 2015

SummerMathGridGames
I love grid games! We used to play this a lot when Mavi was learning how to count. If you  haven't heard about it yet, the mechanics are pretty simple.

What you need:
  • die/dice
  • counters
  • grid game board
How to play:
Roll the dice. Identify the number on the die.  Count  that amount of counters and place each one on the picture in the grid.  Continue playing until you fill out the grid.

Subtraction Game:
For a little challenge, I added a twist! Instead of the conventional one, we played a subtraction game. We used two dice.  To play, roll the dice and subtract the small number from the bigger number value in the dice. Say die[1] = 4 and die[2] = 6.  So 6 - 4 = 2.  Take 2 counters and place it on the grid.

If you have die[1] = 5 and die[2] = 5, you get 0.  Therefore you will not have any counter in the grid. Whoever fills the grid first wins!  So if you get lots of 0, you will mostly lose the game.

I love how Mavi easily memorizes the number combination and the answer!

Such a brilliant way to keep him engaged and learn mathematics at the same time! And this can be played by multiple players as well how cool is that?!

Try it now! I've got 8 different grid games for 2 sizes (6x5 for older kids).

FREE Subtraction Booklets
I created these booklets a long long time ago when Mavi was just around 4 years old and when he was beginning to learn basic arithmetic.  Unfortunately, I changed laptops so I was not able to share these and thought that I lost my files! Good thing Husband recovered it for me so I’m able to share this with you.

Number Cards and Roman Numerals (with FREE Cards)

Thursday, March 26, 2015

RomanNumerals
As you all know, we are rowing books from Five in a Row (we are loving this so far!).  This lesson in Roman Numerals is in line with the book The Glorious Flight (My son enjoyed every single page of this book! He even made a video narration of this book which you can watch here.).  This is the first time Mavi encountered such numbers and he was surprised to learn that the numbers are represented by letters!

I made use of our wooden Montessori number cards for this lesson and roman numerals handwritten on a paper (I ran out of printer ink!).  We started off with the units (ones).  He got the pattern right away and continued working up to the hundreds.

We stumbled on the thousands as I myself was not knowledgeable of the the Roman Numerals in thousands LOL.  We searched the web for the corresponding symbol for this.

He realized that he only needs to memorize a few letters because the representation is almost the same as counting 1,2,3. According to him, he just have to remember that…
ones is for I
five is V
ten is X
fifty is L
hundred is C
five hundred is D
thousand is M
five thousand is V with one bar on top

He worked on the rest of the numbers with less assistance from me and here he is so proud of his work!

And now, if you are interested you can download your FREE printables of the Number Cards and Roman Numerals by clicking this link. Hope you find this helpful. Thank you! Don’t forget to like and pin this!

FREE Ikea Puppets Matching Cards

Monday, February 2, 2015

10952587_898740970157816_4250595218062348284_n
As mentioned in my Instagram, Vito (and Mavi!) enjoyed playing these cute puppets from Ikea.  Because Vito is starting to appreciate pictures, and learning to identify them, I made each puppet a matching card so we can play a matching game in the next few days.

Anyone interested to download a copy of the cards, feel free to click the image above for the link. Or click here.
Enjoy!
