DIY Letter Puzzle

Wednesday, July 1, 2015

Here’s how I made our alphabet puzzle when we’re still in Serbia.  Using Melissa and Doug Magnetic Letters, I traced the pieces into a cardstock using a Sharpie.
DSC_0414i
And there you have it! An instant, so easy to prepare letter puzzle! Mavi looooves it to pieces! He plays with it every single day.
DSC_0438[7]
I believe you can do this to any other magnetic letters.  So go ahead make your own!

Star Unit Activities and {Learn & Play Link UP}

STARPIN
Welcome to another series of Letter Sound of the Week!  Today, I’m going to share our ‘star’ themed activities for learning the letter s sound. Vito really really like seeing stars around the house, and it’s the first shape that he can identify.  So while he’s at it, we jumped from letter c to learning letter s!

Letter Sound Basket. None this week. All we ever did was look at stars!

Painting the letter S.  We are exploring different mediums in painting and currently, the boys love the roller paint brushes I got for them last month.  So here is Vito painting the letter with a roller brush which he loves to use.  As we do the stroke, I would emphasize the word “up” and “down”.   I would exaggerate the hand stroke a little bit to demonstrate what does up and down means. And yes, this is also an activity for colour recognition: yellow.

Playdough & Star Cookie Cutter.  Playdough is a great activity for fine motor skills.  Vito is enjoying playdough so far.  He likes squeezing and grasping the dough already.  We used our star cookie cutter for this.

Counting & Gluing.  An activity that’s like hitting two birds with one stone.  Practise gluing and counting at the same time.  What I did here was punch the star shapes and made Vito apply glue on the paper.  Then we place the stars according to their number.  We then count the stars over and over.  These days, Vito loves to count than reciting the letters LOL. He’s like, 2, 2, ,2!

Colour Matching.  This is a DIY.  I printed stars in coloured cardstock papers, laminate then glue them on the popsicle sticks. The bead cubes were from Melissa & Doug Lacing Beads. We matched the stars to the cube by placing them into the hole.   I showed Vito how to do it first and then he mimicked my actions.  The matching of colours is still a hit or miss, so I’m guessing he couldn’t recognize them yet.DSC_0138

Big and Small.  A random activity while playing the cookie cutter.  I was showed Vito the big star and small star.  He wasn't interested at all with this.

Now, for this week's feature!  Here are my favourites this week, something that we would like to try this summer!

Summer Math Activities and {Learn & Play Link Up #8}

Thursday, June 11, 2015

Welcome to another week of  Learn & Play Link Up!  I know that we are all enjoying summer, savouring the heat and everyone just wanted to play.  But because we are settled in a place where we barely have summer (because it rains all the time here in Ireland!), I made sure that we have activities  indoor to have that summer “feel”.

For this week in The Pinay Homeschooler, I’m featuring our Summer Themed Grid Number Games.  Mavi and I had a great time playing this while it was gloomy for an entire week! Sure the weather spoilt our plan for outdoor play but our grid game kept us entertained!  To know more about it, click the image below or here.

SummerMathGridGames
Now I’m going to feature 4 awesome math post from our beloved readers!
  • 25 Math Games for Kids from Study at Home Mama
  • Ladybug Love Activities from A Kinder Gartens Vintage Homeschool
  • Nautical Math Pack (activities) from Year Round Homeschooling
  • DIY Math Peg Board from Child Led Life
  • Fraction Activities w/ Printables from Every Star Is Different

Insect Study for Toddlers with Free Printable {Learn & Play Link Up}

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

We are learning about insects this month! And because I'm exhausted most of the time doing separate activities for the boys, this time, I tried having a themed unit which both boys can enjoy.  So while Mavi is learning about insects, Vito is learning as well, but in a different level.  I will showcase Mavi's activities later on. In this post, allow me to present to you simple activities that will expose or introduce your little toddlers to insects.
So for Vito, I prepared 3 simple activities for him to enjoy. These are easy to prepare and I provided a printable file for the matching activity for your convenience.

Insect Sensory Bin
This is a no-brainer.  I think all kids love sensory tubs!  The contents of my bin are:
  • Safari Toob Insects
  • Black Beans
  • Butterfly figures from Wild Republic
In less than a minute, I have a learning toy for Vito already!  Oh my, he was sooooo giddy when he saw this!

InsectSensoryBin

InsectSensoryBin
Allow your little ones to explore all that there is in the bin. Make sure to prepare your vacuum cleaner for the mess!  But please, SUPERVISE YOUR CHILD ALL THE TIME.  Vito mouths objects so I watch him like a hawk to make sure he won't swallow any of the beans.

Insect Matching Cards
InsectMatchingCards

This is matching the insect figures to that of an abstract material, like the cards.  I wanted to use picture books, to avoid printing. But I realized that Vito can match objects better if the pictures look exactly the same as those figures.  So I took photos of our insect figures and created matching cards from them.

Yes, Vito can identify animals now, especially in books! So I experimented if he can do it with in matching cards.  Like the cards? You can download it from here.
InsectMatchingCards

I added spider even if it's NOT an insect because this is what Vito sees everyday outside our house.  He can identify spider and calls them "der".  So with an animal figure and a matching card, I tried if he can match them.... and he did!!

So my conclusion here is that, for his age, he can only match cards of those he is familiar with in real life.  Like the butterfly, the ladybird and the spider.  The rest, he ignored them.   That's a good start though.  We'll work on this step by step.  Three matching cards for a little toddler and I'll add one card as he progresses.

Bug Hunting
Of course, the best way to learn is to have a real life encounter with these creepy crawlers.  I took out the boys in the yard and we searched for bugs.  Unfortunately, the bugs decided to hibernate, so we only collected ants!
BugHunting

Even so, Vito was still happy observing the tiny creatures!

Animal Unit Studies and {Learn & Play Link Up # 5}

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

Another week of Learn & Play Link Up! I am so excited to feature 5 blog posts that has captured my attention.  As you all know, we love doing animal studies at home because Mavi looooovess learning about them!! And my little Vito is now obsessed with dogs and spiders! Yes! spiders! So I’m thinking of having an animal study soon, and I now know where to get inspiration!

So here are the posts that are featured for this week:

Montessori-Inspired-Caterpillar-Butterfly-UnitLife Cycle Art from Minnie Monets and Mommies

Alligator Printable Pack from Mommyhood in Holland

Montessori Inspired Butterfly – Caterpillar Unit from Living Montessori Now

Dinosaur Color Sorting Activity from Stir the Wonder

Insect Sensory Bin from Rubber Boots and Elf Shoes

This week on The Pinay Homeschooler, I am going to feature our insect studies for the past years. insectMavi loves everything about insects.  it is also important that kids understand how to differentiate insects from other creepy crawlers.  Remember, not everything that crawls are insects!  Like spiders, worms and centipedes… they belong to  different groups!

Welcome to the Learn & Play Link Party!

Simple Crafts for Toddlers and {Learn & Play Link Up #4}

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

I’m starting to introduce Vito to art works by doing craft works once a week. Of course he cannot do complicated things yet. So at times, with the help of big brother, we’re able to accomplish beautiful things!

But that I’d like to feature a few wonderful post from our link up last week.  These are simple and easy to do activities (just like what we do) with little kids. I hope you check them out!

Linky PIN 4

Felt Ladybug Craft and Counting Activity  and Flower Felt Craft from Living Life and Learning

Hands-on Learning:  Patterns with Candy Land! from 3 Dinosaurs

Thumbprint Keepsake Keychain from Living Montessori

Monoprinted Mother’s Day Card from Sparkling Buds

This week on The Pinay Homeschooler, Vito had a lot of fun doing crafts! Yes, even if he is only 18 months, I exposed him to glues, papers, pens, paints, crayons and more.  Here is Vito being artistic for letter b crafts

DSC_0278 This is the letter b for butterfly. Even if we don’t see butterflies that much, Vito is fascinated with them.  The wings are made up of Vito’s hands by the way, the one who assisted in creating this is no other than the big brother.

Playing with Colors and {Learn & Play Link Up #3}

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

Don’t you just love spring? The colors of the flowers brighten up my day.  The beauty of the cherry blossoms never ceases to give me a smile.  Reason why, in this week’s link up, I will talk about the things colors and the things that you can do with it, to see a mood.

Check out some of these fun activities from our previous link up that features the use of colors!

Linky#3

Featured posts for Playing with Colors this week:

Flower Water Tube Stamping by Montessori on Mars.  Wonderful activity for creating beautiful materials through color mixing using stamps!

Montessori-Inspired Color Activities for Toddlers from Living Montessori Now. A great way to introduce young children to colors.

Learning About Seasons from Planting Peas.  You will see how they use color variations to set the seasons.  Amazing!

Under the Sea Preschool Activities from Natural Beach Living.  I love the use of blue water beads to setup an ocean senosrial tub! The use of colors can definitely simulate a habitat!

Art Appreciation Activities from Every Start is Different. A compilation of art activities for kids!

This week on The Pinay Homeschooler, we create warm and cool colours! Mavi mentioned something like “It’s making summer and winter Mom.”Colours FB

We are doing a lot of artworks at home.  Just the other day, we were looking at the masterpieces of famous artists like Monet and Van Gogh.  We talked about the techniques the artists used and how they set the mood of their paintings.  In particular, we talked about the colours they used during the daytime and night time.  In effect, we ended up talking about warm and cool colours which eventually brought us to this activity.

So Mavi and I practiced mixing paints to create our own warm and cool colours.  He was even more excited that we get to name our own colours!

Warm colours are colours of fire and sun, yellow and colour tones of red and orange.  Can you see the  names of his colours?  Yellow Golden Sun of Heavens and Lobster Bloody Red!Colours1

Cool colours are those of water, violet and colour tones of blue and green.  Love how he created his names:  Gods Light and Coral Sea Blue.

Colours2

This is a simple activity that you can do with your kids anytime of the day! Less preparation but with much to learn.  Now with this knowledge, we can create paintings with proper mood settings!

By the way, about the coloured tempera paints we are using. The brand is Gouache Liquide Tempera Paints. I am very particular with the paints we use at home because Mavi has asthma.  This brand has negligible smell and I love how strong and vivid the colours are.

So start making you colours now and have fun naming them!

Pin this for later! Colours Pin
