Animals Around the World and {Learn & Play Link Up}

Friday, September 18, 2015

Mavi still couldn’t get enough of his animal collections.  After putting Vito to sleep, I saw this in the carpet laid out, sorting his animal collections according to the continent in which they thrive. The continent puzzle is from Tower High Learning and the animals are combinations of Schleich and Safari Toobs.

He also managed to use our Animal Fact cards. Oh we love these cards! It indicates in what habitat these animals belong.

Aside from sorting, I would see him tell stories of these animals, each one has a role and portraying a character. Quite cute and funny too!

Montessori Decimal System (Base 10) with Golden Beads

Thursday, September 17, 2015

It's the time of our 12 Month of Montessori Series, and today I'm sharing with you how Mavi learned the concept of the decimal system and base 10 using the Montessori golden beads materials.  We worked on this when he was about 4yrs old and at times he still wanted to do the complete layout (see the bottom of the post for this).   The aim of studying the decimal system is for the child to understand, organize and  classify the numerical quantities into different hierarchies of units, tens, hundreds and thousands.

One of the best thing about these golden beads material is that it provides a sensorial approach in learning mathematics.  In using the golden beads, a child can easily differentiate a unit from tens, from hundreds and thousands through its depth, weight and quantity.  In effect, there is retention to the concepts because the child can easily visualize the quantity of numbers.

So without further ado, here’s Mavi’s presentation of how we use the golden beads in learning the decimal system.

Here’s a short presentation which  Mavi and I created on how to use the materials in introducing units, tens, hundreds and thousands.
The Layout
Now for the overall view of the decimal system, combining the number symbols and the quantity, here’s Mavi working on the decimal system layout.  Sorry if he only worked till 4000, as we do not have enough thousand cubes Sad smile  Enjoy!

Zoo Animal Tracks

Saturday, September 12, 2015

*** contain affiliate links **

If you are looking for a simple activity that will keep your kids hooked for a longer period of time, this is one I highly recommend.  Recently I bought a few Schleich animals from a local store because it was on sale.  Since Vito looooves animals, I whipped this activity in an instance, just in time to make use of our white PlayDoh.

Materials needed:  different animal figures with detailed tracks (I highly recommend Schleich) and playdough (PlayDoh).

One by one, create tracks of your animals in the dough.  Vito was fascinated of the tracks!  He wanted to do it by himself Open-mouthed smile

Here’s a closer look of the tracks. How cool is it that they’re all so detailed!

DSC_0242

Can you identify which animals they belong to?

DSC_0245

Yay! We didn’t have enough dough though.  But Vito played with this for a long time! We’ll definitely do this more often.

Hope you like this post. Don’t forget to pin for later!

Collection of Farm Animal Activities for Toddlers (22 Months)

Friday, September 11, 2015

Last week Vito had a great time learning about farm animals.  I find it quite fascinating how my kids can easily learn a concept just by using animal figures.  It took me years to convince myself to invest in these animal toy figures.  We didn’t have them till Mavi was 3 years old.  Vito is lucky enough to be able to play with these at a very young age.  So from reading books and making sounds, I leveled up the learning approach to widen his vocabulary, learn phonic sounds, practise logic and more.
