Educational Puzzles for Preschoolers

Monday, February 13, 2017

Because I’m often asked of the puzzles we use at home, I’m sharing what we have here to give you an idea on what my preschooler loves.   Some of these puzzles are way too advanced for Vito, so we usually start working the puzzles together.  But as he gets used to the material, he would at times insist on working it on his own and occasionally would ask for assistance.
*We own all of the puzzles in the pictures below.
Puzzlesfor3YrsOld
1.  LIFE CYCLE PUZZLES (layered puzzles)
  • The Tree Puzzle from Goki (in the collage)
  • The Chicken Puzzle from Goki (in the collage)
  • Pumpkin from Beleduc
  • Apple from Beleduc
  • Banana from Beleduc
  • Carrot from Beleduc
  • Strawberry from Beleduc

We use these often but I don’t talk about them in the blog a lot.  Last year we used the Pumpkin puzzle in line with our autumn unit and it was a hit!  The Goki puzzles are much bigger than the Beleduc but the pieces are not numbered on the back (control of error). The Beleduc puzzle pieces are numbered so it’s easier to sort out the pieces by layer before you start solving the puzzle.

2.  PUZZLES WITH TRAY (24 pieces)
  • Diggers At Work - 24 Pieces (in the collage)
I love all the framed puzzles from Melissa and Doug! Unfortunately, we only have a limited supply of the puzzles here, thus I only got Vito the Diggers at Work.  If I can, I would add Rainforest Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle , Butterfly Garden and Space Voyage Wooden Jigsaw.  This is Vito’s current favourite.  I love the size and the chunkiness of the puzzle pieces.

3.  GEORGE LUCK PUZZLES
  • Hape George Luck Arctic Animals Wood Puzzle (34 Piece)
  • Hape George Luck African Animals Wood Puzzle (39 Piece) (seen in the collage)
These are MY favourite for Vito as of the moment.  He is crazy about animals so he enjoys solving the puzzles in their natural habitat.  I am also eyeing the Asian Animals Wood Puzzle , Hidden Depth Wood Puzzle, and Noah's Ark Wood Puzzle.

4.  BELEDUC BODY PUZZLE
  • Boy Puzzle
You must have seen this a lot in our IG account or blog.  We are using this since Vito was 2 years old.  We haven’t used this for a while so I need to check if he can work on this independently now.  The Grandma & Grandpa puzzle is also beautiful, and the Mother Layer Puzzle too!

5.  PUZZLE 3D PYRAMIDIX
A 55 pieces puzzle for math.  Vito is currently using the top 3 layers and Mavi is working on the entire pyramid.  This is perfect for counting practice, logic and of course for puzzle addicts!

6.  MONTESSORI PUZZLES
  • Botany
  • Zoology
  • Continent
Need I say more?  Aside from learning the parts of each plant and animal, and the continents, the child is also able to practise his/her pincer grasp using the knob in each piece.  These are inexpensive puzzles that I highly recommend.  Vito always loves working the Montessori puzzles and with the small number of pieces in each botany and zoology puzzles, I believe they are suitable to toddlers ages 2 years old.

7.  FLOOR PUZZLES
  • Melissa & Doug Dinosaurs Jumbo Jigsaw Floor Puzzle (48 pcs, 2 x 3 feet)
This was actually for Mavi but Vito would sometimes ask me to work this with him.  It’s a 48-piece puzzle, too advanced for 3 years old but can also be suitable if your child shows an interest or is progressing way beyond his capacity.
