The Elements of Art: Learning about Lines

Tuesday, July 11, 2017

It is timely that I get to share how we nurture the artistic side of the kids using Montessori principles.  In this month’s 12 Months More of Montessori Learning, I’m sharing Vito’s current obsession:  drawing!  If you’ve been following me on Instagram, I shared how Vito enjoys making faces of us (Dad, Mom and Mavi).  He just uses lines and dots, a little bit of shading to convey the emotions and faces of his family.  So Mavi suggested if we could teach him how to make different kinds of lines, just like we did before.

So for this month’s feature which is FINE ARTS, I’m presenting this simple yet very productive activity of ours, which is learning how to make lines and what are they used for.  Our main source was from this beautiful site.  I discovered this helpful printable years ago when Mavi was 3 years old.  The printable is free and you can download it for your own learning activities as well.
For this activity, I made the boys use a black paint for isolation.  I introduced the lines one by one and allow the boys make their own version.

The activity captured Vito’s full attention and was cooperative the whole time.    As we make the lines, we talked about where we see it and where can we use it.  Like for example, for broken lines, Mavi would mention that it’s used on the roads, for curved lines we see it on trees etc.  It was a perfect activity for the boys to contemplate on where they see art and how it’s being useful.  And best of all, this is the kind of activity that your young and older kids can do together!

These are Vito’s and Mavi’s works.  As you can see we made a long line, short, broken, curved lines, thick and thin lines, horizontal and vertical.  What’s not seen here are spiral, parallel, zigzag and more!

Our next activity on art would be making organic and inorganic shapes!  You’ll know more about this soon so keep on checking the blog for updates!

I love your blog! When my son reaches his elementary years, I plan to blog about it, too. www.amontessoristory.com

Also, I clicked on a couple of links in this article (I'm super interested!), and they weren't working. I would love to see the awesome artists resources!

Keep up the great work! So great to be able to provide your children with a Montessori education!

What a neat exploration! I love how they both seem so interested. It's great that you have created an activity they both enjoyed even though they are different ages :)
