Montessori Inspired Apple Activities

Monday, September 24, 2018

I'm sharing our apple activities for the past weeks.  Autumn is definitely apple season and it’s the perfect time to explore this amazing and nutritious fruit!  Below are our top 5 Montessori-inspired activities that you and your kids will love in learning about apples.

Montessori Inspired Apple Activities

Apple Fruit Varieties

Using the cards from Montessori Print Shop, the boys and I explored the different types of apples from the outside.  Here we talked about the differences in colors, shapes, and the skin.  Here we used our sense of touch and sight to describe the different varieties of apples that we have.

Note that there are more varieties of apples but we only focused on the ones that are available here in our place.

Apple Fruit Tasting

Of course, we need to taste each of these apples and differentiate them from one another.  Does the external look give justice to the taste?  When the apple looks delicious from the outside, does it mean that it is also sweet?

I prepared this setup to make it more inviting.  The boys eat apples everyday.  They even bringing them to school so preparing a different setup will entice them to have do the taste test activity.  I placed the matching cards to make sure that they can name and identify the apples.

Result:  The boys loved Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, and Braeburn.  I encouraged them to describe the texture of the flesh aside from saying that it is sweet or sour.  This allows them to work on those taste buds while feeling the flesh if it's crunchy or creamy.

For extension work, I had the boys blindfolded, do the taste test and identify the apple using their taste buds.  Mavi was able to get the Granny Smith right (because it’s the only one that’s sour), he got confused between Pink Lady and Gala, and couldn’t tell between Braeburn and Golden Delicious.  Vito, well, all he could say is either sweet or sour LOL.

Parts of an Apple

We also examined the parts of an apple.  Again, you can get these cards from Montessori Print Shop.  Vocabulary words your child will learn are skin, flesh, and seeds.  We talked about how seeds are essential in growing another apple and that led us to learn the life cycle of an apple.

Apple Life Cycle

As part of our exploration on apples, of course we needed to learn how this amazing fruit came to be, where did it come from?  Is it from a tree?  A bush?  From vines?  The materials we used here are from our shop Apple Life Cycle and the apple layered puzzle is from Beleduc (Amazon).

Apple Math Activities

Adding some counting activities to our apple themed unit, we worked on number bonds using our Montessori beads.  You can learn about this activity from here (Apple Number Bond Activities).

And, some simple counting activity using playdough and our apple count dough mats.  This was the time when Vito and I discussed about the apple orchards and why we don't have them here in Ireland (or maybe there are some orchards here but I just don't know where they are located).  So in this counting activity, we were imagining an apple orchard and placing playdough apples in the trees.

And that’s about it for our Apple Unit Activities for this year!  I hope you find this post helpful!  If you are looking for more materials on apples, you can try these learning cards that we also used recently.  We used it in matching and forming letters, counting, writing, and more!  Learn about these amazing printables here or click on the image below.
