Making Noise - Baby's First Music Activity

Monday, May 3, 2021

Around 4 to 6 months, when the baby can manipulate objects, it's a perfect time to give her all kinds of noise-making materials, including rattles, shakers and music boxes. As your child gets older, you can provide baby drums, a xylophone or even a lightweight metal cooking pot and spoon will do!  Encourage your little ones to experiment with sounds by banging two objects together.  These sounds may get in your nerves, but these early musical experiences teach the baby the laws of cause and effect and, at the same time, learning about rhythm.

If you are looking for some safe baby music in toys, here are some of our favourites!

November Activities for Preschoolers

Friday, November 18, 2016

Last week, Vito refused to do any of our language activities, so we worked mostly on practical life, counting, sorting and storytelling. He also started walking to Mavi’s school (no buggy!) despite that it’s a 30 to 45 minutes walk round trip.  This lessens our time for “preschool” in the morning since we have to leave early.

Sound Waves Experiment: The String Phone

Wednesday, July 27, 2016

I think is one of the best example of explaining to a 7 year old that sound travels.  I enjoyed playing with this as a young child. But instead of using styro cups, we were used tin cans which I think is more effective.

Montessori Inspired Activity: Musical Instruments

Monday, July 25, 2016

As we continue our Sound and Music Unit, I also introduced the different musical instruments.  Of course, it would be best if we have all of these (LOL) or least own one, but since we don’t these beautiful musical figures from Safari Toob will do.

Montessori-Inspired Sounds and Music: The Musical Hand Bells

Sunday, July 24, 2016

Vito is 32 months old.

I prepared a few simple activities for our Sound and Music Unit.  It was the week of heatwave so I grabbed the opportunity to bring the boys outside more often to practise their biking and scooting skills, and as for me, able to run and lose a few pounds LOL.

Joking aside, this musical hand bells was a favourite of Vito. He loves using just to listen to the sound it makes and at times ringing the bells together to make “music”.

Learning Music for Kids (with FREE Printable)

Friday, July 17, 2015

Welcome to another series of 12 Months of Montessori.  For this month, I am going to feature our Montessori-inspired activities in learning music.

Learning Music for Kids
Different Types of Music
Mavi loves learning about music. We often hear different genre in stores like classical, rap, hip hop and ballads. He would often ask me “why are some people making sad music Mom?”.  Therefore, I decided to introduce Mavi to the different types of music.  How music is used to express one’s feelings, how it is used to pray, to entertain and how it symbolizes one’s origins.

Sorting Musical Instruments

Monday, July 13, 2015

Yesterday, we started our Montessori-inspired activities for Music.  This is in preparation for our Montessori Music post this coming Friday, the 17th of July for 12 Months of Montessori Series.

Now, I just wanted to highlight this activity, of sorting musical instruments.  There are lots of instruments out there, but I think it is important for the child to identify the groups or families of these instruments to understand how they work.

Sorting Musical Instruments
The Helpful Garden has this amazing file of musical instruments!  It was created as a Montessori 3-part cards, but in our activity, we sorted them out according to their categories.  So I started off by presenting the instruments to Mavi and how these instruments make sounds.  (We also watched videos on how these instruments are being used)
