It always excites me to introduce new things to Vito. Our recent activity is learning about plants, specifically in this post, the parts of a plant. I love doing plant study with the boys. I’ve been doing this with Mavi since he was 2 years old, and I love doing it all over again with Vito! Printed materials used in the activities were all homemade, and some were used during Mavi’s preschool days. This is Vito’s second year of plant study, and you can read related studies here:

PARTS OF A PLANT
I want this to be as hands-on as possible, so I made use of a dead plant in our yard to teach Vito of the basic parts of a plant, specifically the roots because we mostly don’t see the roots. We examined each part, showing him where the roots are, the stem, leaves and as he would describe it “dead flowers”.
Here I showed him the roots, he “there’s a lot Mommy”. We looked in all corners of the soil and he can see roots everywhere.
The book we are using is called . This has been our favourite reference and I highly recommend this book. It covers roots, stems and flowers and even a discussion on the photosynthesis. You can see Mavi using this book 5 years ago.
Here’s the part where I made Vito match the parts of the plants to the our control cards. The 3 part cards of the parts of the plants is from our shop. We are only using the control and picture cards as Vito cant read yet. Here’s Mavi’s parts of a plant study 5 years ago.
From here we also discussed the functions of each parts. I also pointed out our vase with flowers, and from here I talked about how stems function as drinking straw, gathering water from the vase and delivering it to the plants/flowers.
You can get our PARTS OF A PLANT 3 PART CARDS HERE if you are interested.
NEEDS OF A PLANT
If you check my Instagram account, I’ve been teaching Vito how to care for plants for months now and through this, I’m able to made him aware of the three basic things that plant needs: soil, water and sunlight.
More about plants and botany lessons coming up for Vito as we will be focusing on these in the next few days.
