Pumpkin Themed Activity Trays for Kids

Monday, October 8, 2018

We are halfway through with our pumpkin activities and I'm sharing some of the highlights in this post!  Below are learning activities on pumpkins which are perfect for homeschoolers and those in the classroom.  I made a short description of each activity and added links to the materials that we used for you as reference.  Enjoy!

Pumpkin Themed Activity Trays for Kids

Letter Writing Practice

We used rice instead of sand and the pumpkin cards from our shop.  Vito loves writing on rice trays, make sure that you put just enough but not too much rice as it wont be as effective as the sand.

Lifecycle of a Pumpkin

We worked on apple life cycle (for preschoolers) last month, so we are doing the same thing with pumpkin, less the activity sheets (I didn’t have time to prepare them).  The life cycle cards we are using here were from our Halloween Themed learning pack from way back and the pumpkin layered puzzle was from Amazon (5 Layer Pumpkin Puzzle by Beleduc).

Pumpkin Lacing

This beautiful lacing printable is from our Fall Autumn Preschool Pack. Vito loves lacing activities and I just have to include this!  The bead laces are from Amazon.

Mystery Picture Hundred Chart Game

I made this mystery picture based on the 100 chart for my eldest but it is not yet in the shop (hopefully soon!).  This activity helps the child identify numbers from 1-100, number patterns, and enables the student to compare numbers (less and more).  Aside from the color code provided, we used our 100 Board number chart, we drew a tile, checked the code then colored the 100 chart grid.  It was absolutely fun! The boys enjoyed it!

Parts of a Pumpkin

So I let the kids see what’s inside the pumpkin, how it smells, and its texture.  Mavi knows about this already since he’s been helping carved pumpkins through the years.  But this is Vito’s first time to really see what a pumpkin really looks like from the inside.  And obviously, he didn’t like the slimy texture LOL.

Parts of a Pumpkin
We worked around by naming the parts that we see inside the half of the pumpkin, and identified the seeds, brains, pulp, and stem.  The external parts were pretty much easy for him, like the skin and ribs.

Measuring Gourd

This has been a favorite not only in the house but for most of my readers!  Gourds are rare and pricey here so we ended up having a printable and did a measuring activity using our snap cubes.  This is part of our Fall Autumn Preschool Pack printable here.

Push Pin Hammering Pumpkin

One classic activity that has always been a hit at home and in social media.  So easy to prepare as well!  Just purchase a bunch of jumbo push pins (I find this safer compared to real nails), a child-friendly wooden hammer (ours is from Ikea) and you are good to go!  But always always supervise the child.  Never ever leave your kid with these materials.  We did these years ago by the way, so he’s quite familiar with this activity.

Pumpkin Themed Counting Cards

This counting cards are part of Montessori Inspired Autumn Themed Early Learning Math Pack which I made 2 years ago.  Aside from counting, the focus here is to learn odd and even numbers.  This is done by sliding the child’s hand in the middle space (when all the manipulatives are placed in the cards).  If all of the counters have a pair, then that’s even, otherwise it is odd.

Cutting Spirals on Pumpkin

We are practicing how to cut spirals, we’ve been doing this over the summer and I would just usually draw it on a paper so Vito could cut.  Because I have to get rid of our cardstock (I have tons), I decided to print these spiral templates into the cardstock in different shapes.  So here, you see the spirals in the pumpkin shape and Vito loved them.  I printed a few more patterns and kept them in a folder so he can do it over and over again (he’s addicted).  If you want to try this at home, any paper will do and you can just basically draw the spiral template on it.
