More of Insect Activities

Thursday, August 2, 2012

I discovered these rubber-made insect toys on a Euro store and bought it right away for our insect study.  My boy was so ecstatic seeing these and played sorting using a tweezer.

DSC_0775

It was a perfect practical life activity for an insect study :) It include flies, ants, spiders, worms etc.

Then he also worked on the 3 part card for the parts of an insect.  We’ve been doing this activity frequently that he finally understands the difference between hind legs and forelegs.DSC_0788

It’s also helps to have a miniature when working on a nomenclature card.DSC_0792

He’s so used in working with this that he can finish it in less than 3 minutes. DSC_0797

The World of Arthropods for Kids (Part One)

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

arthropod title
So where do I start? LOL

Arthropods, is quite a huge subject, especially for little ones who's exposed to this for the first time.  To them, there's only insects. But now, here I am explaining to my son that everything he sees that's not a mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian or fish is an insect.  And just like those vertebrates, insects are just part of a much bigger group that is called Arthropods.

Materials Used:

The Animal Kingdom Chart (Arthropods)  by The Pinay Homeschooler.  I am giving the master chart for free together with the definition cards and sorting activity.  The chart activities together with the rest of the pack are included in a bundle.  It is available for purchase from my shop, "The Arthropods Learning Pack".

Arthropod Cards.  I am giving away the common insect nomenclature and fact cards for free.  Again, the entire arthropods cards will be included in the Learning Pack bundle.

Animal Lifecycle Cards.  We used this to identify insects that undergo incomplete metamorphosis (grasshopper) and complete metamorphosis (butterfly).

Animal Figures. All are from Safari Ltd Insect TOOB and Safari Ltd Butterflies TOOB.

Books used (affiliates), please refer at the end of this post.

Activity 1:  Presentation of the Arthropod Chart
DSC_0637
To introduce the Arthropods, I presented the Animal Kingdom Chart -> Arthropods to Mavi.  He's already familiar with this as we have had Animal Kingdom lessons previously.  Now I just have to explain, that similar to the Chordates, Arthropod is a group composed of different species like crabs, centipedes, millipedes, spiders and insects.

He loves the chart!  It helped that we did The Animal Kingdom before :)  As you can see in the picture, we worked on sorting the animal figures according to the description cards which is included in my printable.  You need not worry if you don't own any of these, I included picture cards in the files so you can still conduct this activity.
DSC_0408
I let him read the description cards and he investigated whether the descriptions are indeed true! Like the number of legs, whether they have antennae or if they have indeed body/thorax/abdomen composition.
           DSC_0665 DSC_0668
 DSC_0671
As you can see, our little Vito is quite interested with what we do as well!
DSC_0679
We first looked into the group of Insects
Activity 2:  Life cycles.  There are two lifecycles which we discussed here.  First, the one  with incomplete metamorphosis like grasshoppers (egg->nymph->adult) and the complete metamorphosis like ladybugs (egg->larvae->pupa->adult).  You can get a copy of my ANIMAL LIFECYCLES HERE.
DSC_0696
Activity 3: Body parts.  Here we looked into the body parts of the insects and how each of these parts differ. Like how does the wings of a butterfly differ from that of the grasshopper and dragonfly.  The difference between the shape of the abdomens of each insect etc.
           DSC_0737 DSC_0749
           DSC_0781DSC_0760
Activity 4:  Books. We read a lot of books! And my son loves matching our animal figures to those in the books!
           DSC_0790 DSC_0793
And that ends the first part of our study.  More coming up in the next post, The World of Arthropods for Kids (Part Two)!

PS. I did not proof-read my post.  Please understand that I breastfeed and babysit while I write and sometimes, my brain is faster than my fingers.  So if you encounter typo/grammar errors, my bad and my apologies.  I just have no time to read-proof, thus the reason why I place as much pictures as I can to demonstrate our activities without too much explanation.  Thank you for your understanding!

What are Insects?

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Here’s a simple way of telling whether an animal is an insect:  has 6 legs (with or without wings).  This is something new to Vito, the word “insect”.  He usually calls them with their real names like flies, bees, dragonflies, etc. but is not familiar with their category.  Now, this is the first time that I introduced this concept, so he struggled a little bit until we started counting the legs!

Montessori Inspired Life Cycle of Insects

Monday, May 29, 2017

Vito and I have been talking about insects in the past few days.  I mentioned in my previous post, the current interest on insects was brought about by their sudden appearance.  So far he has encountered quite a few already like garden ants, flies, wasps and bees, and bugs. It’s a shame we haven’t seen grasshoppers and dragonflies here, I used to catch and collect them as a child (back in Asia). Anyway, since our last activity on Farm Families, Vito still loves to learn about mommies, daddies, and babies, thus I introduced the life cycle of insects early on in our activities.  Unlike my past activities with Mavi, this one is very simple and straight forward.

Montessori Inspired Life Cycle of Insects

Seen here are the life cycles figures of:  butterfly, bee, ant, and ladybird.

Life Cycle of a Ladybird

Friday, July 6, 2012

My son had been playing with his insect toys lately and since it’s summer, I decided that it was time for an insect study.  Honestly, I am terrified of insects... so it took me awhile to do something like this... because the sight of them give me the creeps.

Anyway, first on the list is the study of Ladybird. Yeah, that’s what we call them here instead of “ladybugs”.  I told my son that they’re just the same... and I made him use the word “ladybird “ for convenience.

Here’s some of the books I borrowed from the library that is ladybird-related.

P1060637

Then I also borrowed a “bug” book and it has a few pages discussing the ladybird and it’s life cycle.  I love that it shows the detailed growth of the said bug in real pictures.

 P1060635

After I presented it to my boy, I printed out the Ladybug Life Cycle from Montessori Print Shop and have him color it.

DSC_0615

I love his choice of colors! They’re all bright and vivid.

 DSC_0622

Oh and he wrote the labels.  I made him trace my handwriting though.

DSC_0624

Then after that, we did some crafts for the life cycle just like what we did with the Frog.  I realized that I only took a few photos because I was busy directing and helping him out.

And here’s the end product.  Lovely isn’t it?

Montessori-Inspired Activity: The Life of a Honey Bee

Saturday, July 16, 2016

Vito is 32 months old.

The appearance of the honey bees in our front and backyard has led us to look into the lives of these beautiful creatures who are the main source of honey.  Vito is terrified of them but not Mavi.  We were out the other day catching a few of them, observing how they produce the buzzing sound and freed them up again.

Introducing Life Cycles to Younger Kids

Tuesday, February 26, 2019

In our home, springtime brings a renewed focus on the topic of life cycles. As a parent, I am often asked how to introduce the concept of metamorphosis, larva, pupa and more to young children who may not be able to visualize these processes. It is a fascinating subject that is easy to understand. I begin by telling engaging stories that help children understand that just like humans, baby animals come from their mothers and fathers. Some animals start their life as eggs and then undergo a gradual transformation that ultimately leads to adulthood.

To help explain these concepts more effectively, we use a variety of learning materials that bring these life cycles to life for children. As we follow the "Montessori" philosophy in our homeschool, we prefer to use hands-on learning experiences that allow children to explore and learn in a natural way. Whether it's using specialized learning materials or observing real-life examples in nature, we strive to make learning about life cycles as engaging and interactive as possible.

Montessori Color Box #2 Activity for Toddlers

Sunday, January 24, 2016

** contains affiliate links **
Mavi is 26 months.
I recently purchased the Montessori Color Box #2 for Vito. I have a few Montessori sensorial materials that Mavi didn’t really find interesting and I was expecting Vito to have the same reaction to the color tablets.  But, I was wrong.  The moment I took it out, it was an instant hit! I was thinking all along that he doesn’t know his colors, but surprisingly he knows them by heart already!  He can match them perfectly but naming them is a hit or miss. He still calls them mostly “yellow” LOL.DSC_0086
As of the moment, I only introduced 4 colors to Vito:  yellow, red, blue and green.  Lately, he can identify orange, that’s because we kept on eating clementines and I refer to it as orange!  So the color tablets are actually for “formal” presentation of secondary and tertiary colors (well, that’s my plan).

Animals in the Freshwater Ecosystem

Saturday, July 12, 2014

A few weeks ago, I would take the boys in the park for nature walks.  And we would always stop by in this huge pond were we get to see different animals and insects like swans, flies and ducks.  It’s a good thing that we previously had our Insect Unit as Mavi was always on the lookout for insects and was identifying them.

So I was thinking then that since we have the Marine Animals, why not talk about the animals in ponds, lakes, streams etc.  And that’s what we exactly did yesterday.  I made picture cards similar to our Marine Animals Cards and talked about each of the animals in the pictures and identified in which freshwater ecosystem they belong.

If you would like to have a copy, simply click on the image below to go to our subscriber page for the download link to the free printable.

Learning about Reptiles: Snakes

Monday, November 2, 2015

Snakes

If you are in the UK or Ireland, you must have heard of Steve Backshall and his animal shows like the Deadly 60.  Mavi is obsessed with Steve, due to his witty and pleasant hosting of the show. You can learn about it here.  Now, going back, he’s been featuring reptiles lately, mostly how dinosaurs evolved into crocodiles, birds,  snakes etc.

What are Reptiles?  We learned from our previous study of the Vertebrate animals that REPTILES have a covering of bony plates or scales.  They vary in sizes and shapes and include forms like snakes, alligators, crocodiles, turtles and lizards.  Reptiles make their homes in great variety of places .

In this post, I will be focusing on snakes, as Mavi and I had a brief discussion about them a few days ago.  This is the book we’ve got of Steve Backshall and we used it as a reference.  We had a few snake figures from Safari Ltd Reptiles TOOB .

DSC_0987

Books.  These are the books of Steve Backshall we borrowed from the library.  Youcan check them out here:Steve Backshall's Deadly 60

DSC_0988

Characteristics of Snakes (things we learned):

  • Snakes’ coverings are dry with perfectly dry scales, they are not slimy.
  • A snake’s tongue is a sense organ, just like an insect’s antennae.  Therefore, when a snake thrusts its tongue, it is simply trying to find out about its surroundings and what is going on.
  • They are the only creatures that can swallow objects larger than themselves.  This is because they have elastic body walls.
  • Snakes have an extra bone hinging the upper to the lower jaw, which allows them to spread widely when swallowing an object.
  • The noiseless and graceful movement of the snake is brought about by the crosswise plates of the snake’s body that is connected to the ends of its ribs.

    Life Cycle of a Snake

This life cycle material is for FREE and you can download it from my SCIENCE PRINTABLE PAGE.

So we looked into the process of how snakes give birth.  We also learned that NOT ALL SNAKES GIVE BIRTH BY PRODUCING EGGS. ANACONDAs give birth to their young!

    Snakes Around the World

So I gathered a list of snakes and we looked at them over the internet.  I didn’t produce any printable file as the images are all copyrighted.  But I provided the link below on where you can find them, and see how they look like or learn about their habitats.
