Tot School Snippets Week 1: Ice
Tuesday, February 2, 2016
I was reading my old blog the other day (private) and I am amazed on how I recorded Mavi’s learning curve week by week. Mavi enjoys reading that blog now! I just have to say that it is quite different when you have one child, you have focus, you have MORE time and well, I was organized. Now, I’m managing and engineering a bigger household, with a school boy and a hyperactive toddler, I barely have time to blog.
So now, I will start writing about Vito’s activities in a week. I have to put a little effort on this, for keeping memories and for Vito to read someday. Currently, we’re not following schedule of doing totschool weekly. There are days when we do a lot of activities, and there are times when I just whip anything that goes into my mind.
Vito is 26 months old.
Crazy Over Do-a-Dot Markers and {Learn & Play Link Up}
Wednesday, December 9, 2015
I know you’ve heard about these already and have seen these markers in other homeschooler Moms. My little Vito had a renewal of interest and can’t stop using them! These dot markers are great tools in practicing hand/eye coordination and concentration. Aside from that, we also use it to learn shapes, colours and letters! Next year, we’ll start using them for counting.
Though there are plenty of FREE dot worksheets online, I prefer handwriting our own sheets to save ink. Here are some random photos of Vito using the dot markers.
For learning letters.
Marking shapes.
He keeps asking for more!
Working on letter ‘t’ again.
To save time, energy and INK, I cut out sheets of paper from the IKEA paper roll and just hand drawn everything. Then I place the sheets on one of the work trays so Vito can easily access them. He would usually work on them in the morning. Note that the markers can stain, but they can be wash off with soap AND water (with a little scrubbing). I have these markers since 2011 and they’re still good as new. Here’s the link if you are interested.

Star Unit Activities and {Learn & Play Link UP}
Wednesday, June 24, 2015

Welcome to another series of Letter Sound of the Week! Today, I’m going to share our ‘star’ themed activities for learning the letter s sound. Vito really really like seeing stars around the house, and it’s the first shape that he can identify. So while he’s at it, we jumped from letter c to learning letter s!
Letter Sound Basket. None this week. All we ever did was look at stars!

Playdough & Star Cookie Cutter. Playdough is a great activity for fine motor skills. Vito is enjoying playdough so far. He likes squeezing and grasping the dough already. We used our star cookie cutter for this.

Counting & Gluing. An activity that’s like hitting two birds with one stone. Practise gluing and counting at the same time. What I did here was punch the star shapes and made Vito apply glue on the paper. Then we place the stars according to their number. We then count the stars over and over. These days, Vito loves to count than reciting the letters LOL. He’s like, 2, 2, ,2!

Colour Matching. This is a DIY. I printed stars in coloured cardstock papers, laminate then glue them on the popsicle sticks. The bead cubes were from Melissa & Doug Lacing Beads. We matched the stars to the cube by placing them into the hole. I showed Vito how to do it first and then he mimicked my actions. The matching of colours is still a hit or miss, so I’m guessing he couldn’t recognize them yet.

Big and Small. A random activity while playing the cookie cutter. I was showed Vito the big star and small star. He wasn't interested at all with this.
Now, for this week's feature! Here are my favourites this week, something that we would like to try this summer!

GALT Cotton Reels
Friday, June 19, 2015

If you’re asking if he can successfully accomplish this on his own, the answer is no. The only thing he can achieve right now is insert the lace in the reel’s hole but he doesn’t know that he has to pull it yet. I love that this activity uses both hands and working together with the eyes.

And he always saves the best for last. Using the reels as stacking toys! Now this is something that he’s really good at!

More toddler activities coming soon!
Letter 'c' Sound Activities
Monday, May 25, 2015
Letter 'c' craft. I made Vito colour the letter c using our Do-a-Dot markers (which he really really loves by the way). Afterwhich, I made him watch Mavi cut the letter and turn it into a letter c carrot.
C for colours. This is again another colour matching activity I prepared for Vito. The cups were from the local store and the cubes were from Melissa & Doug Lacing Beads learning toy. We do this activity everyday for Vito to know his colours.
C for cottons. We tried this activity, painting using cotton balls but Vito was horrified of the cotton. So we proceeded with finger painting instead. We are using Giotto Bebe Fingerpaints at home.
Playing with pegs (pretend corns). We played around with favourite FantaColor pegs and Vito is getting better fitting those smaller pegs into the hold
Steamed carrots. Vito's snack for the entire week LOL.
C for cars. We played with cars every morning and matched them to our homemade colour cards. Read about it here.

Toddler Beginnings 05
Sunday, February 22, 2015
Happy Monday to all! My not so little Vito is starting to show signs that he can do a lot more with fine motor skills now than before! How cool is that? And for this series, may I say that he has his own favourites already? Come take a look!
We do endless reading at home. Was surprise that he chooses his own book now. And obviously, based on the pictures he enjoys reading the Spot series with me! These books are from the library but you can get them from Book Depository[aff.link]. They’re so easy to read and engaging. These are lift-the-flap books and yes he enjoys lifting the flap! He would nod his head if its not Spot :) The Animal book is a board book which I got last year. Vito loves animals and I just have to include this board book for animal recognition. He would say “raaawrr” whenever he sees animals on books, pictures or toys!
For our colour basket I’m featuring the red colour because of Valentines Day. A discovery basket of all something red that Mavi could find in the house. It got socks, shirt, a feather, LEGO and just about anything. Of course, I have to include my homemade colour card. The book was also purchased from Book Depository [aff. link].
So what do we do with our red discovery basket? Well, Vito loves tinkering things and this is what I would give him whenever he needs something to touch and play with. Every time he takes an object, I would describe it and always mentioning the word “red”. Like red socks, red feather, red barrel. Then I would line them up and would say “look Vito they have the same colour… they’re all red”. I would at times encourage him to say the word “red” as well.
Our shelf also contains the following toys for practicing fine motor skills.
Mavi’s fishing game toy which he got from his birthday. We never used this until I recently discovered that Vito can use this for 1:1 correspondence. Later on, we realized that the game itself was fun after all!
This barn puzzle is a miss. Vito is NOT interested at all. I got this because it was on sale. I talked about the animals in the puzzle but he doesn’t mind. What he loves to do here is actually removing the pieces and placing them in the basket.
Again, scribble scribble scribble. This is what he loves as of the moment. I guess he sees his big brother and I write all the time and that’s what he also wanted to do. He just imitates, which is good! He’s good holding a pen actually and here he enjoys scribbling on a piece of paper using all three crayons. We finally get to use this Classic Pop Up toy from Galt. It was in the cabinet for almost a year and now he’s more than interested. He loves pulling out all the tubes, putting them back again, and pressing the little people (the tubes has faces!). Later on we’ll use this for colour matching :D He still mouths objects though, so there are instances that he would put the tubes in his mouth. So parents, be warned!
We have this soft rubbery blocks which we used for counting. I introduced this for stacking but he wasn’t interested. What he loves to do with these blocks is to mess them, and put them back in the bag. And I find his choice of activity much better! Early start for tidying up!
We also use them to count. We count a lot at home: counting fingers, toes, kisses, buttons… and this one I showed him how to associated counting with symbols. Yes I know, too early… but he loves the numbers more than the blocks!
We skipped painting this time and decided to do something different. In our Art basket, we have here materials for our collage activity which is composed of tissue paper (red hues) and a contact paper.
Easy activity. Vito couldn’t tear up the tissue papers yet (he can tear up the kitchen towel and toilet paper though), so I did it for him. Then I showed him how to drop or place the pieces into contact paper. He didn’t like the sticky contact paper at all! He loves dropping the paper but would not touch the contact paper. I encouraged him my placing his hands on it. This is to take away of his fear and that it’s a safe object for him.
I displayed his art work in our window and he was so fascinated by the contact paper that he keeps on going back to touch it!
Oh we have two songs for this series: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and When You’re Happy and You Know It. We sing it in the afternoon, dance with it and create actions which Vito loves to do. Vito, just like his older brother loves to dance as well and he enjoys doing this activity in the afternoon before Daddy gets home. This is a good way to practice their gross motor skills!
Oh yeah and we had a beautiful weather last week and we grabbed the opportunity to go out in the yard, explore the grasses and the rocks! Vito was running around, climbing up the steps, crawling in the grass and playing with our neighbour’s bicycle!
And that’s it!! Watch out for our next post on Toddler Beginnings as I’m going to feature simple activities for St. Patrick’s Day!
