Montessori-Inspired Parts of an Insect

Thursday, June 11, 2015

We are having a blast looking into the world of insects! In this post, I will show you how we are learning the different parts of an insects as well as the source of our materials.
Parts of an Insect
Seen on the picture are the materials we are using to learn about the insect’s body parts.  The insects that we examined here are ants, butterfly, ladybird, grasshopper and dragonfly.  As you can see, this is NOT really hands-on because of two factors:
  • The absence of these insects (except for ants and ladybird) during the time we have this study.  No grasshoppers (tropical country) and no butterfly at all!
  • We cannot dissect ladybird and ants.  They’re just too tiny!
With these, we just used our nomenclature cards and animal figures.  Speaking of animal figures, I highly recommend Safari Toobs Insects.  You can easily demonstrate the body parts because of the details in the figures.
Resources in the picture:
  • FREE Insects and Spider Silhouette Cards.
  • Insect cards from my Arthropods Pack
  • FREE Butterfly Nomenclature Cards
  • Grasshopper Nomenclature Cards
  • Ants Nomenclature Cards
  • Caterpillar Nomenclature Cards
  • Dragonfly Nomenclature Cards
  • Insect Nomenclature Cards
  • Usborne Bugs Book
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • Montessori Butterfly Puzzle
  • Montessori Wasp Puzzle
  • Safari Toob Insects
Nomenclature Cards
We worked on the entire nomenclature cards in the span of one week.  Because of the repetition of the activity, Mavi was able to identify the similarities of these insects, like:
  • They have segmented bodies: head, thorax and abdomen
  • 6 legs
  • Most have antennae
Each nomenclature card comes with a definition booklet of the body parts.  Mavi loves reading our booklets (this is a perfect way to let your child improve their reading skills!)

Montessori Puzzles
I purchased these puzzles before I had Vito.  We used it to identify the different parts of an insect and worked on it

Mavi loves to trace the puzzles and made his own version of butterfly.DSC_0873
The puzzle was also enjoyed by Vito.  He loves butterfly (even if he hasn’t seen one yet) and chose to work on the puzzle.

Summer Math Activities and {Learn & Play Link Up #8}

Welcome to another week of  Learn & Play Link Up!  I know that we are all enjoying summer, savouring the heat and everyone just wanted to play.  But because we are settled in a place where we barely have summer (because it rains all the time here in Ireland!), I made sure that we have activities  indoor to have that summer “feel”.

For this week in The Pinay Homeschooler, I’m featuring our Summer Themed Grid Number Games.  Mavi and I had a great time playing this while it was gloomy for an entire week! Sure the weather spoilt our plan for outdoor play but our grid game kept us entertained!  To know more about it, click the image below or here.

FREE Summer Themed Grid Number Games

Friday, June 5, 2015

SummerMathGridGames
I love grid games! We used to play this a lot when Mavi was learning how to count. If you  haven't heard about it yet, the mechanics are pretty simple.

What you need:
  • die/dice
  • counters
  • grid game board
How to play:
Roll the dice. Identify the number on the die.  Count  that amount of counters and place each one on the picture in the grid.  Continue playing until you fill out the grid.

Subtraction Game:
For a little challenge, I added a twist! Instead of the conventional one, we played a subtraction game. We used two dice.  To play, roll the dice and subtract the small number from the bigger number value in the dice. Say die[1] = 4 and die[2] = 6.  So 6 - 4 = 2.  Take 2 counters and place it on the grid.

If you have die[1] = 5 and die[2] = 5, you get 0.  Therefore you will not have any counter in the grid. Whoever fills the grid first wins!  So if you get lots of 0, you will mostly lose the game.

I love how Mavi easily memorizes the number combination and the answer!
DSC_0656
Such a brilliant way to keep him engaged and learn mathematics at the same time! And this can be played by multiple players as well how cool is that?!

Try it now! I've got 8 different grid games for 2 sizes (6x5 for older kids).

Insect Study for Toddlers with Free Printable {Learn & Play Link Up}

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

We are learning about insects this month! And because I'm exhausted most of the time doing separate activities for the boys, this time, I tried having a themed unit which both boys can enjoy.  So while Mavi is learning about insects, Vito is learning as well, but in a different level.  I will showcase Mavi's activities later on. In this post, allow me to present to you simple activities that will expose or introduce your little toddlers to insects.
So for Vito, I prepared 3 simple activities for him to enjoy. These are easy to prepare and I provided a printable file for the matching activity for your convenience.

Insect Sensory Bin
This is a no-brainer.  I think all kids love sensory tubs!  The contents of my bin are:
  • Safari Toob Insects
  • Black Beans
  • Butterfly figures from Wild Republic
In less than a minute, I have a learning toy for Vito already!  Oh my, he was sooooo giddy when he saw this!

InsectSensoryBin

InsectSensoryBin
Allow your little ones to explore all that there is in the bin. Make sure to prepare your vacuum cleaner for the mess!  But please, SUPERVISE YOUR CHILD ALL THE TIME.  Vito mouths objects so I watch him like a hawk to make sure he won't swallow any of the beans.

Insect Matching Cards
InsectMatchingCards

This is matching the insect figures to that of an abstract material, like the cards.  I wanted to use picture books, to avoid printing. But I realized that Vito can match objects better if the pictures look exactly the same as those figures.  So I took photos of our insect figures and created matching cards from them.

Yes, Vito can identify animals now, especially in books! So I experimented if he can do it with in matching cards.  Like the cards? You can download it from here.
InsectMatchingCards

I added spider even if it's NOT an insect because this is what Vito sees everyday outside our house.  He can identify spider and calls them "der".  So with an animal figure and a matching card, I tried if he can match them.... and he did!!

So my conclusion here is that, for his age, he can only match cards of those he is familiar with in real life.  Like the butterfly, the ladybird and the spider.  The rest, he ignored them.   That's a good start though.  We'll work on this step by step.  Three matching cards for a little toddler and I'll add one card as he progresses.

Bug Hunting
Of course, the best way to learn is to have a real life encounter with these creepy crawlers.  I took out the boys in the yard and we searched for bugs.  Unfortunately, the bugs decided to hibernate, so we only collected ants!
BugHunting

Even so, Vito was still happy observing the tiny creatures!

DIY Animal Puzzle

Monday, June 1, 2015

I used to have these bundles of colouring books from friends.  Once Mavi is done colouring them, my tendency is to put the books away or practically speaking, throw them in the trash.  Yes, I don't keep those as we don't have enough storage space in the house.

But one time, I came across Montessori wooden puzzles that I really really want Mavi to have. My problem at that time is that I don't have access to Montessori shops. So what I did was I cut out each parts of the animal puzzle in the book as seen on the picture below, and made Mavi form it just like a puzzle.

Frog Puzzle
Mavi working on a frog puzzle
It was actually a brilliant idea! Not only did he enjoy working it, I was able to make use of all the colouring book's pages for an educational activity!

Instead of just putting them together, I made him glue them on an outline which I made as a guide.

Teaching Animals to Toddlers

What is it with animals that kids love? My husband asked me this question when he saw my pile of Safari Toob animal figures years ago and asked me why I incorporate animals in our homeschool activities. I have no scientific answer to his question but all I know was that Mavi was enchanted with animals (until now!). The way I see it, it's because of the unique sounds they make and how different they look from their parents and siblings LOL.

As a young boy, Mavi loved singing the Old McDonald song because he enjoys making the animal sounds. He can get hooked for hours to any animal-related activities and play. Of course, a visit to the zoo completes all these lessons and activities. We've been to four zoos for the 6 years, all of which are in different countries. As of this writing, Mavi is obsessed with dinosaurs even if he haven't seen one.

Now comes Vito. He also loves animals. The first animal sound that he ever made was that of the dinosaur's (thanks to his big brother!). Aside from dog, cow, bird and cat, Vito identifies other animals through their sound. Now with this sudden interest, I am joining the bandwagon of "invitation to play". If you haven't heard about it yet, here's an amazing tutorial from Teach Preschool.

So this is my first attempt of setting up an invitation to play of animals for Vito.  Oh boy! He was so happy, kept on jumping and clapping his hand showing his excitement!   As we play, I keep telling him the names of the animals and their sounds.  This is what he likes best. See the picture on the left? He's asking "what's this?" and that's a cue for me to answer and make the sounds LOL.
But guess who enjoyed it the most??? The big brother!
I wish I could get rid of all the furnitures in the sitting room and replace it with a huge play table for these boys lol.

He specifically loves this popsicle stick cage Mavi created for him.  Vito still mouths objects so I'm not letting him use our Safari Toob animal figures.  What we are using here are Schleich animals and Duplos.  The stacking cups you see there are Playskool Barrels which are my son's favourite toy.

Now this was an awesome and unplanned activity, and it turned out enjoyable for the boys!  Why not start doing your invitation to play?

You don't need to buy new toys. Just make use of what you already have, set it up in  table accessible for the kids, add some craft sticks.. papers, baskets and playdough and you're all set!

Now be sure to pin this for later!

How to Teach Fractions with Manipulatives
Last week, Mavi and I got a little bit of time to work on fractions.  I've been wanting to do this with him but we seldom have some time together because of Vito.  So it took us around 3 days to complete the activities.

Letter 'c' Sound Activities

Monday, May 25, 2015

This was a fun and quick set activities.  We basically finished all of these in a week.
Letter 'c' sound basket.  Our object basket was composed of a carrot, a toy red car and a cow animal figure.  The foam letter is from Munchkins Foam Bath.

Letter 'c' craft. I made Vito colour the letter c using our Do-a-Dot markers (which he really really loves by the way).  Afterwhich, I made him watch Mavi cut the letter and turn it into a letter c carrot.

C for colours.   This is again another colour matching activity I prepared for Vito.  The cups were from the local store and the cubes were from  Melissa & Doug Lacing Beads learning toy.  We do this activity everyday for Vito to know his colours.

C for cottons.  We tried this activity, painting using cotton balls but Vito was horrified of the cotton.  So we proceeded with finger painting instead.  We are using Giotto Bebe Fingerpaints at home.

Playing with pegs (pretend corns).  We played around with favourite FantaColor pegs and Vito is getting better fitting those smaller pegs into the hold

Steamed carrots.  Vito's snack for the entire week LOL.

C for cars.  We played with cars every morning and matched them to our homemade colour cards.  Read about it here.

Books this week:
  • Caps for Sale
  • The Carrot Seed
  • BigCats Phonics From Cow to Carton Milk
  • That's not my Car
You can also purchase these books from Book Depository, shipping is free!

Photos of Vito working.

More letter sound activities coming up in the next few weeks!

Thank you for taking time to read this post! Don’t forget to pin it for later.
Why not try reading our Letter ‘a’ Sound activities?
Our Letter ‘b’ Sound activities might interest you as well!
