Food Pyramid and Food Groups Activities for Kids

Monday, June 17, 2019

Vito loves the book, What's for Lunch?!  He loves learning all about the food groups, on what food will help him have stronger bones and teeth, food that will give him energy, and food that will keep him healthy.  I love that he developed this interest early on.  I think that it's important to educate little ones about healthy food because right now, he's super conscious on what he eats, and he's more eager to eat fruits, drink lots of milk and water!

Food Pyramid and Food Groups Activities for Kids
Come take a look at some of the learning activities that we worked on to support his interest on food.

Montessori Inspired Space Themed Learning Activities

Saturday, February 10, 2018

We are moving to new things this week as Vito’s interest is starting to be directed more about his body and senses.  For the past few weeks, we’ve been doing work about the moon, the planets, and space.  Here’s a roundup of our activities in learning about the solar system and space in general (in no particular order).

Montessori Friendly Gift Ideas for 3 Years and Older (2017)

Monday, November 20, 2017

I would like to make this post brief and to the point.  We don’t have a lot of toys at home, so I only have a short list.  I called this list “Montessori friendly” because these are toys that my kids would actually play on a regular basis.  To get the best of toys for your kids, it is better that you are aware of what they really really like and what makes them happy.

So to give you ideas on what my kids love to play at home scroll down below to check them out.

First Great Lesson (4): Study of Elements and the Periodic Table

Tuesday, August 8, 2017

The kids and I worked on the periodic table a few weeks before our vacation. We did this years ago, and Mavi was excited to work on this activity again. This is a continuation of our Great Lessons, and if you are new to this post, you can revisit the first and second parts of the activities here:  (1) Experiments on the Laws of the Universe and (2) The Volcano.

Sparkly Planets for your Solar System

Wednesday, July 12, 2017

We’ve done this before (in 2013) and we made another one again! Creating our planets for our solar system using aluminium foil. Have done this before?  I mentioned the source of this activity in my previous post, read it here.

Top 30 Learning Activities for 3 to 3.5 Years Old

Friday, July 7, 2017

I created a list of  Vito’s favourite activities starting from 36 months to 3.5 years of age.  I know we’ve had a lot more than 30 but these are his favourite and my top picks as well.  I chose these activities over the rest because he mostly asked for these activities to work on more frequently than others.  He’s more engaged, he learned a lot of vocabulary words and these were the activities where he spent a lot of his time exploring.  So I hope this list will inspire you and give you ideas for things to do with your child around this age.

** Note: Always supervise your child, especially if he/she is handling sharp tools and small objects.

Introducing the Solar System to Preschoolers

Thursday, April 13, 2017

In line with our Days of Creation activities, the boys and I talked about how the universe came to be.  Mavi used his Usborne Fact Cards once again to review some solar system concepts and this made Vito get into the mood of exploring the planets as well.

How to Study The Story of the Universe and The Origin of Life

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

It’s time for another 12 Months of Montessori Series and today I am sharing Mavi’s favourite book series.  We have been using these books for years now.  The books are all about the cosmic history to the evolution of man.  The stories are accompanied by stunning images and time-line to follow.  Everything in these books are just too magical and enlightening for him!  In this post you will also see the activities that the kids did in order to make the Study of the Universe and the Origin of Life a lot more interesting.

Best Arts & Crafts for Kids and {Learn & Play Link Up}

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

Years ago, Mavi would do a lot of artist study.  One of my favorites is our Van Gogh project, The Sunflower.  It was one of those rare moment wherein both Mavi and I were in depth with our subject and were absorbed by the beauty of painting.  But it was just more than artwork. We studied the life of Van Gogh, and how his life reflected in his work.  (click the image below for more details)

Now thinking about it, I picked the best art projects and crafts in our link up this week.  Here are the featured post:

Guide to Space and Heavenly Bodies Study for Kids (with FREE Resources)

Friday, July 10, 2015

I’ve been planning this unit since last month because I wanted to prepare ahead of time. We’ve done A LOT of space and heavenly bodies unit in the past and I wanted to upgrade the lesson, add something new for Mavi to learn.  So right now, I’m sharing our Space and Heavenly Bodies Study for this year. I’m also putting a bunch of links from our previous lessons and activities for your reference. I hope you find this post helpful.

A look at the Northern and Southern Sky
We looked into the star constellation maps seen in the northern and southern hemisphere.  This is to make Mavi aware that there are stars that can be seen in the northern part of the world but not visible on the other side.

Space Exploration History
I made chronological cards of the space exploration history.  The pictures and the fact cards were all taken and referenced from Wikipedia and Wiki Commons.  Though Mavi can read this straight from the site, I wanted to have something tangible and something that we can work on, like arranging the timeline and matching it with objects.
DSC_0577
The cards I created contains the year and a title of the major event that occurred in that year.  The description is very much readable by kids though there were a few words that Mavi couldn’t pronounce well or he needed to ask me for the meaning.  Such a good material to improve reading skills, spelling and vocabulary!DSC_0656
After which, I showed him how we can arrange the cards according to their timeline.  This gives him a visual presentation of the order of events.
DSC_0678
Aside from arranging the cards chronologically, you can also use them to match objects.  Here we used Safari Toobs Space, Safari Toob Insects (fly) and Safari Toob Farm (dog).

So if you wanted to have a copy of the cards for Space History Timeline, click here for the link.
Parts of a Space Shuttle
The parts of a space shuttle is something that Mavi really looked forward to.  Oh boy he was so happy that I made him another “flying object”.  The first one was the Airplane Nomenclature Cards, and here’s the newest Space Shuttle Nomenclature Cards.  This is based on the NASA’s space shuttle design.  Using the cards, a child will learn the different parts of a space shuttle.  I wrote the parts’ functions in a notebook because I was out of ink.

Sensory Tub
Now, this is something I prepared for both of the boys to play with.  Xavi had his own Letter S: Star Unit study last week so it was timely that I prepared this Space Sensory Tub for the boys.  Figures are from Safari Toob Space, homemade PlayDoh planets and homemade Earth felt.

Thursday, July 9, 2015

We recently concluded our First Great Lesson part 3 which is all about the space and the solar system.  We were able to reuse our material of Space History Cards which I made years ago because Mavi was asking me all about how did NASA came to be.

Our Science Curriculum (K-6, Kindergarten to Grade 6)

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

For a change, I made plans/curriculum for Mavi’s after school lessons.  I think I need this for I am about to start schooling Vito as well.  What happens here is that we discuss the topic and he will work on the tasks or lab experiments. Finally, he answers the activity sheets.  The tasks should be done with minimal help from Mommy.  This will encourage him to think for himself, work on his own and start to make decisions.

Note that even if Mavi’s knowledge in Science is way beyond his age, I started with the K lessons so as not to miss the little things.  Anyway if we’re done ahead of time because he knows it already, we will proceed to Year 1 level even before the school year ends.  So here are the things we need to accomplish for this year :

Our Science Curriculum (K-6, Kindergarten to Grade 6)

Life Cycle
  • Living and Non-living things
  • The Human Body
  • All About Plants
  • Nature and Environment

Water
  • Water Cycle
  • Oceans
  • The Weather

Earth’s Crust
  • States of Matter
  • Minerals
  • Rocks
  • Discovering Dinosaurs (Dinosaurs, Geological Times)

Earth’s Moving Force
  • Volcanoes
  • Earthquakes
  • Continents and Oceans
  • Hazards

The Story of the Universe
  • Universe
  • Solar System
  • Earth
  • Land and Water Forms

Applied Science
  • Science and Math, Tools of Discovery
  • Physics, Observation, Electricity, Magnets
  • Technology, Machines, Inventions
  • Natural and Man Made Environment

The Solar System and The Planets II

Thursday, February 27, 2014

My son completed his mini project of our Solar System unit and he finally got to display it in his room.  It was a simple project for my 5 years old, something that I made him work during the midterm break.

I mentioned this previously in my post that we're going to plot the planets in a black craft paper.  First thing, he placed all the INNER PLANETS.  My son memorizes the order so I made he did all the work here.  I decided that it would be best to label the planets so he can memorize the spelling.

DSC_0406

As you can see, we added "asteroids"  after Mars.

 DSC_0413

Then he continued with the OUTER PLANETS.

 DSC_0417

When everything is in place, he added stars (stickers).

DSC_0424 DSC_0426

And we both stick it on the wall using blutacks. And look how pretty it is! He was so happy how it turned out.  He felt proud of what he has accomplished! And I have to say that the use of foil in planets made such a huge difference!!  Now this is art and learning combined :)

The Planets and The Solar System (Part I)

Monday, February 24, 2014

Hello everyone! I'm back! Sorry for my absence as my time was eaten by chores and errands for the past few days.

We're been doing a lot of Space and Astronomy activities lately and I wanted to share with you some of our activities.  We started off by reviewing the planets in the Solar System. The cards seen on the picture were from Usborne and while we identify the planets Mavi tried creating models using his plasticine.

(You can check this link to view our past activities)

solar system

DSC_0049

We also play a game "guess the planet". I adapted this game from the toy which he received last Christmas.  He loves this game!

solar system

I also took out our nomenclature cards and he worked on it as well.  For the link of the file, please click here or the image below.

solar system

On a separate day, Mavi tried using playdough to create another set of model planets. solar system

I have to say the second batch look better :)

solar system

And just like the project that we did with the Phases of the Moon, Mavi wanted to decorate his room with planets too. And instead of simply painting them on a cardboard, we made a similar approach to this one.

I cut out circles for our planets and covered them with aluminum foil. We color the planets using Sharpies.

solar system

And look how they turned out! They are so colorful and looks festive!  I love how it glittered on a black background!

solar system

Next step is to plot them into the "space", but since they're still a little bit wet we'll continue the rest of the work by tomorrow.  We'll identify the inner and outer planets, add some asteroids and stars and add labels as well.

solar system

And there you go!  Ideas for your planets and solar system.  I will share with you how this decor turned out once we're done.

Happy Monday to all!

Space and Astronomy Unit

Thursday, February 13, 2014

We've been watching too much alien movies (animation) that Mavi begins to show a lot of interest in planets and the solar system once again.  This month we're doing the Moon and Solar System once again.

DSC_0324[3]

You can read past astronomy themed activities here.

I also made printable materials to go along with our study.  It include planets and the astronomy cards all in one file.

ss8[6]And you might be interested... I made cute printable for preschoolers! Oh I can't wait to use this to my little one!  It's a 40 pages file which includes the following:

Space Unit

(Click the image for the link)

  • Beginning sound word cards
  • Matching activity that consist of control cards, picture cards and labels
  • Memory Game Cards
  • Word cards for reading and spelling (or practice writing)
  • 1– 10 Counting Cards
  • Number Cards
  • Patterning activities
