Letter N: Going Nuts!
Tuesday, October 27, 2015
I love nuts! We’ve got plenty around the house, thus I decided to come up with activities for Vito since he’s been seeing them around the house and loves to play with my walnuts.
Letter N Object Basket. Reinforce literacy, letter ‘n’ symbol and phonics, vocabulary, and verbal skills. In the basket we have: nine, upper and lowercase N/n, necktie, DIY sandpaper ‘n’, nuts.
Hammering Peanuts. This is a practical life activity that develops hand and eye coordination, and develop those hand and arm muscles. I first set it up in a tray, but the peanuts were slipping so I had to put cling film to hold them. Vito loves physical activities so he enjoyed this. The only drawback is that the hammer that we used were so tiny
Letter N Craft. I always make sure to include crafts in our weekly activities. My main goal here is for Vito to practice his manual dexterity like squeezing the glue, picking up small objects or pencils. Now that he’s familiar with glue, I gave him a glue with small opening for him to squeeze it.
Here he is applying peanut shells on the letter N. Improves pincer grasp through picking up small objects. Note to parents: always supervise your children when dealing with small objects.
Color Green. I’m introducing letter green this week. I gathered a few objects from his toys and place them all in a basket.
And we painted green in an A3 paper. Working with one color a week works for him.
When they dried up, we place them on the wall for everyday viewing.
Nut Matching. For visual discrimination (difference in objects), widen vocabulary and concentration.
Counting Walnuts. Builds early number and counting skills.
Forming Shapes using Nuts. Teaches shapes, fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination. This is Vito’s idea! I made a circle using the walnuts then he took the circle puzzle and place it in the middle, matching them together. Brilliant! We practice some more by drawing shapes on a piece of paper and he would trace the line using the peanut shells to form the shape. He enjoyed it!
And that’s about it! And what I happened to the nuts? I’m still consuming them LOL.

Montessori Sensorial Activities: Stereognostic Mystery Bag
Thursday, March 30, 2017
I finally introduced the Montessori Stereognostic Bag to Vito. The Montessori Stereognostic Bag is often composed of 10 matching pairs of wooden shapes that is drawn in a bag to feel and match. This activity develops the stereognostic sense of the child, using touch to create a mental image of the object. Stereognostic sense is defined as the ability to perceive and recognize the form of objects in the absence of visual and auditory information. Other version of this is called “the mystery bag”, wherein most homeschool moms customized the content of their bags by putting nature objects or just about anything from around the house.

3D Shapes
Tuesday, August 14, 2012
We had a short vacation last week thus the absence of homeschool activities. We had so much fun exploring the beautiful sites of the north, visited the zoo and a lot more. Will share it here soon!
Anyway, Mavi and I made some models for our 3D shapes lesson. But it seems that the little guy was more interested in making cards for his friends and applying glitter glues on it.
We waited for it to dry up. And here they are...
Too bad I couldn’t make a sphere! As you can see, my son wrote letters on it LOL. We sorted out the printables that I got from Montessori Printshop.
Using these models, I’m happy that he can now distinguish 3d shapes with the plain ones. And it is surprising that he memorizes the name of all the models that we created!

Navajo Cheerios Painting
Saturday, September 1, 2012
We’re currently working on our North America unit. To understand a little bit of American history, we made this “cheerios” painting. This idea came from this book:
It contains lots of comprehensive introduction to American history, a peek at what the people eat and drinks, how they are dressed, their beliefs and how society was organized. Among the projects in the this book, my son picked the designing of a Navajo.
It is said that healers from the Navajo tribe create paintings using colored sand. And it is believed that these creations had the power to cure illness.
Because we don’t have colored sand, we pulverized cheerios.
Now I made a design in an art paper. I placed the cheerios in a muffin paper. As a guide, I place number on the shapes that are going to have the same color. Then spread glue into the shapes of color number 1.
I made my son cover the glue using the desired powderized cheerios. We did this with the rest of the shapes/colors. He loves filling the glue with cheerios, he was very particular with the colors mixing. I was telling him it’s okay because it’s unavoidable.
I just love seeing little hands in action!
His favorite part, lifting the paper and shaking off the excess powders.
We let it dry for a few hours and here’s what we ended up with. A Navajo tribe healing painting :)
Happy crafting!

Preschool Learning Letter L Activities
Saturday, October 14, 2017
Presenting our letter “l” activities! We’ve started “letter of the week” kind of activities since September because of Vito’s interest in letter sounds and reading. We’ve been reading FIAR books over the summer and this led him to further explore words and language activities.

B4FIAR: Harold and the Purple Crayon
Friday, March 3, 2017
I love book extension activities. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy doing Before Five In a Row with the boys. So when I introduced the book Harold and the Purple Crayon, I knew that its a story that we can explore beyond than just reading. The book itself is enjoyable to read, engaging and the boys found it funny. Vito was glued to it for a long time. At times, he would even “pretend” to read it by himself, mimicking how I read it to him at night.
If you love this book, or if you plan to get one (highly recommended!) I listed below the areas of learning we touched by just doing this simple easy to set-up activities:
Crazy Over Do-a-Dot Markers and {Learn & Play Link Up}
Wednesday, December 9, 2015
I know you’ve heard about these already and have seen these markers in other homeschooler Moms. My little Vito had a renewal of interest and can’t stop using them! These dot markers are great tools in practicing hand/eye coordination and concentration. Aside from that, we also use it to learn shapes, colours and letters! Next year, we’ll start using them for counting.
Though there are plenty of FREE dot worksheets online, I prefer handwriting our own sheets to save ink. Here are some random photos of Vito using the dot markers.
For learning letters.
Marking shapes.
He keeps asking for more!
Working on letter ‘t’ again.
To save time, energy and INK, I cut out sheets of paper from the IKEA paper roll and just hand drawn everything. Then I place the sheets on one of the work trays so Vito can easily access them. He would usually work on them in the morning. Note that the markers can stain, but they can be wash off with soap AND water (with a little scrubbing). I have these markers since 2011 and they’re still good as new. Here’s the link if you are interested.
